Title: Information Forum on Growth
1Information Forum on Growth
- Using facts and projections, we endeavor to
- inform Jacob Wismer parents and our community
about student growth at Jacob Wismer.
2Original Jacob Wismer Plan
- Planned in 2000, built and opened (September)
2001 - Calculated total capacity with portables is 749
students - Classroom square footage smaller than average,
but within range - Jacob Wismer classrooms are 875sf, average is
900sf, sizes ranges from 795 SF to over 1000 SF - Coverage Play Area and Field smaller then average
- Information from Beaverton School District
Facility Plan, May 2002 - Plans for future main building capacity issues
- Stubbed for 2 double wide portables in NW
corner - Allows for 4 classrooms - reduces field space
3Annex Details
- The initial intent of the portable structures
emphasized a kindergarten program that by design
was not a fully integrated portion of the full
day education program - Annex takes up 2 of the sites 8.2 acres, usable
JW site is 6.2 acres - Opened in 1999
- 4 doublewide portables 1 single portable
- Capacity of 8 classrooms office
- Calculated total capacity 200 students
- Not placed/located for utilization of main
building capacity issues - Originally used by Findley Elementary for
Kindergarten - ESD tenant for past 3 years, leasing for 1 more
year (05-06) - The Annex to become available Fall 2006
- There has been discussions regarding having Jacob
Wismer Kindergarten and Findley Elementary
Kindergarten programs located in the Annex - Local School Committee has asked that the Annex
be removed from the site as early as possible
4Jacob Wismer Current Status
- Highest Permanent Capacity Elementary School in
District - Largest size school in terms of square feet
- Permanent Capacity (without portables) is 711
students - All available classroom space is currently
utilized - Each PE, Music, Library, Art class occurs every
5-7 days - ESL program is located in the center of one pod
- With current enrollment
- Lunch starts at 1045 am
- On non-rainy days students wait in line to use
the play structure - On rainy days children are restricted to covered
area outside - 5-6 sf of space per student to play in
- Additional safety measures and restrictions are
necessary due to space limitations of play area
5Jacob Wismer Enrollment
- Current enrollment is 730 students _at_ 102.7
capacity - Projected enrollment for 05-06 is 761 students _at_
102.6 capacity - Kindergarten pre-enrollment for 05-06 is

number of 118 students.
Beaverton School District Projected Enrollment
and Utilization of Capacity for September 30,
2005. Filed dated 12/6/2004 Very Large 5th
grade leaving June 05, allows for space for growth
6Zoning and Urban Growth Boundary
- 826 acres were brought into the UGB but this
decision is currently under appeal. Appeal
should be decided shortly. It is expected that
most of the land will be brought into the UGB
for future development. - Infill continues to occur, new Bethany Corners
homes are all sold - Washington County Planning Commission has
recommended for approval a comprehensive plan
amendment to allow up to 32 more homes directly
north of Jacob Wismer, (now zoned rural). - There is still land for which development has not
yet been planned adjacent to the above property
7Beaverton School District Plans
- Most schools in Beaverton School District are
near, at or over capacity - Currently no bond funds to build new school(s)
- Bond Levy in May 2006 to build new schools for
2008 school year is under consideration by the
Board - Short term plans
- Adjustments to school boundaries, and/or add
portables to schools - Long term plans
- Bond Levy for May 2006 to build more schools for
2008 - Bond is estimated to be for 175 million
- Most elementary schools close to or over building
capacity - NW corner capacity average is currently over 100
- More housing is being built in this area
- Enrollment caps are not being considered because
there is little space at other schools
Superintendent Colonna has stated that the lack
of future capacity for projected growth is our
biggest problem.
8Districts Plans for Jacob Wismer
- Boundary adjustments are not an option for Jacob
Wismer - The elementary schools surrounding Jacob Wismer
are close to, or will be at 100 capacity - Short Term plans for Jacob Wismer
- 1 double wide portable to be placed outside the
NW corner - Providing 2 additional classrooms for Fall 2005
- Decisions about who will occupy portables will be
made by the staff as part of the year end
planning process - The Annex to become available Fall 2006
- Discussions regarding having Jacob Wismer
Kindergarten and Findley Elementary Kindergarten
programs located in the Annex - Enrollment Caps are not likely because the
Bethany area schools are full
9Impact of projected enrollment at Jacob Wismer
- Jacob Wismers Outside areas are significantly
smaller than surrounding elementary schools.
Inside areas, cafeteria, gym, and library are
larger than other schools - Result of increased student enrollment at Jacob
Wismer could lead to - Classrooms with student enrollment exceeding
District caps - Kindergarten relocating to Annex (fall 2006)
- Instruction in PE, music, library and art
occurring every 7th school day - Students will have these classes only 3 times
per month - Increased crowding resulting in reductions in
opportunities for all students - The districts plan to remove the Annex cannot
occur until more schools are built.
10Outside Play Space Comparison
- Outside play area is part of our infrastructure
- Below is a comparison of Jacob Wismer outside
play area to that of surrounding elementary
schools using current enrollment

12Action Plan for Jacob Wismer
- In an effort to preserve the education of our
children at Jacob Wismer, the LSC recommends - Keep current level of Staff
- Increase Staff as student enrollment increases
- Increase Classroom Staff
- Increase Specials Staff
- Increase Classified Staff (Aids)
- Passage of bond levy in May 2006 may allow
consideration of the Annex to be relocated and
fields added to Jacob Wismer - Work at local and state level to bring
legislative changes to assist school districts
with financing capital improvements
