2IEP Transition Services
- Beginning not later than the first IEP to be in
effect when the child turns 16, or younger if
determined appropriate by the IEP Team (mandatory
14 in State of Tennessee) - 1.Appropriate measurable postsecondary goals
- Based upon age appropriate transition assessments
- Related to training, education, employment and
where appropriate, independent living skills.

- Course of study
- Coordinated set of activities
- Results oriented process
- Needs-strengths, preferences, interests,
instruction, related services, community
experiences, employment, post-school adult
living, daily living skills functional vocational
evaluation.
4- Age of majority- informed of rights
- Not later than 1 year before
5Writing Measurable Post Secondary Goals
- The postsecondary goals should be stated in such
a way that we could measure - The extent to which the student has been able to
achieve what they set out to do, and - The extent to which the transition services
prepared the student for taking the next step.
6Measurable Postsecondary Goal Areas (Top of
Transition Plan)
- Training or Education Specific vocational or
career field, independent living skills training,
vocational training program, apprenticeship, OJT,
job corps, 4 year college or university,
technical college, 2 year college, vocational
technical school (less than 2 year program). - Employment
- Paid- (competitive, supported, sheltered)
- Unpaid Employment (volunteer, in a training
capacity) - Independent Living, where appropriate
- Adult living, daily living, independent living,
financial, transportation

8Must there be a measurable postsecondary goal in
each area?
- YES!!!
- Educational/Training and Employment- can be
combined into one all-inclusive goal or two or
three separate goals. - Independent Living- Optional (where appropriate)
9Measurable Postsecondary Goal Employment After
high school, I/Betsy will work as a
veterinarian's assistant.
Training/Education After high school, I/Betsy
will receive on the job training in grooming,
providing care for and handling animals.
Independent Living After graduation, I/Betsy will
live in the apartment on my grandmothers farm.

11Transition Services Courses of Study
- IEP Team, must determine what instruction and
educational experiences will assist the student
to prepare for the transition from secondary
education to postsecondary life. (HCAI) - Focus on
- Courses of study (all courses and education
experiences) - How the educational program can be planned and
relate directly to the students goals beyond
secondary education. - Show how those courses are linked to those goals
12- Promotes the concept that the high school program
focuses on post-school results. - Helps student and family select courses of study
that are meaningful and motivate students to
