Bookstart
  • Bookstart is built on a simple premise-
  • babies who have an early introduction to books
benefit in lots of ways, educationally, socially,
    culturally and emotionally.
  • Bookstart is about partnership.
  • and love of books is a gift for Life.

3
The Research
  • In 1992 Booktrust commissioned research into a
    pilot project with 300 babies.
  • Upon joining school, Bookstart children were
found to be ahead of their peer group in all nine
    baseline assessments including numeracy.
  • At age seven, Bookstart children were found to
have maintained this advantage over time and were
still ahead of their peer group.

4
Benefits to the child
  • Parents as first educators
  • Language and communication skills
  • Listening skills and attention span
  • Bonding and emotional intelligence
  • Foundations of literacy
  • Increase in school readiness

5
  • Our study has shown that the home environment
can really make a difference what the parents do
with the child is more important than the
    parents educational qualifications..Education
matters, qualifications matter, but if they read
to the child, play rhyming games, sing songs,
talk about letters and sounds, and take the child
to the library, these behaviours at home are more
important and can compensate for a low education
    level

Extending Bookstart
  • And because it is our basic belief that every
child should have the opportunities, today
available only to some, we will extend the
Bookstart scheme and at 9 months, then at 18
months, then at age three, provide free books
universally for every child. For almost 2 million
children a year, their first introduction to
learning - an investment not just in every child
but an investment in the future of our country.
