Jupiters Magnetosphere
  • Jupiters magnetosphere extends to 100 Jupiter
radii on the Sun side of the planet.
  • It rotates at the same rate as Jupiters
ionosphere which means it has a ten-hour rotation
    cycle.
  • Charged particles moving through Jupiters
magnetosphere cause radiation that we can pick up.

3
This is a drawing of Jupiters Magnetosphere. In
the center is the Io taurus. The solar wind is
coming from the left and the magnetosphere
creates a bow shock very similar to a boat moving
through the water.
4
Io
  • Ios orbit is very erratic. This is because of
interference from other moons moving by and
    exerting gravitational force on Io.
  • This force is amplified by the intense
gravitational force of Jupiter and creates tidal
forces of up to 100 feet.
  • These tidal forces make Io a very volcanic moon.

5
This is a picture of the volcanic surface of Io
6
The Io Torus
  • Two causes.
  • The extreme volcanic action on Io spews particles
out of Ios gravity and they stretch behind in
    Ios orbital path.
  • As Io passes close to Jupiters atmosphere it
pulls up particles from its atmosphere and these
are also left in its path.
  • These particles eventually fall into Jupiter or
are flung into space by the rotation. Causing
more radiation as they move through the
    magnetosphere.

The Jupiter-Io Current
  • As metal objects move through a magnetic field
    they produce an electric current.
  • Io rotating around Jupiter causes a current of
    around two trillion watts.
  • It is carried in what is called an Alfven wave,
which is a sort of plasma wave.
  • This current may be energizing the Jovian
    emissions.

9
This picture shows the Jupiter-Io current. The
green line shows the probable path of the
current from Jupiters North Pole, through Io and
back in the South Pole. The white circles in the
upper right and bottom pictures show that
Jupiters magnetic field is about 15 degrees off
its axis.
