spicy (hot). We use special hot peppers in
    Ethiopian cooking.
  • lets drink to Rebecca.... Heres to (This
drink is to celebrate) the beginning of a new
    life!
  • Variety is the spice of life (Life is more fun if
    we try many different things).
  • You must be experiencing a certain amount of
culture shock (confusion caused by contact with a
place other than ones own)..., having a meal
with a senior citizen let out for the evening (an
older person who is allowed to spend an evening
out).I feel ready to take whatever comes my way
(face anything that comes to me).
  • My car broke down (failed to work), and this guy
helped me out (fixed my problem).
  • Oh, he said these trips wear him out (make him
    very tired)...
  • Well, its all yours (its your turn to use it).
  • You look very sharp (well-dressed or stylish).
  • Well, I am off to (leaving for) the library. I
have a paper due (have to turn in a report) in a
    few days.

money I need to pay for my room).
  • Dont you look nice, all dressed up (in fancy
    clothes)...
  • Thanks, I got this blouse (a womens shirt) on
    sale (with a discount).
  • Oh, I slept like a log (slept very soundly). I
was dead to the world (I did not know what was
happening in the world at that time).
  • Help yourself to (Feel free to drink) some
coffee. Use the big blue mug (a cup with a
handle). Consider it yours (It is yours).
  • Oh, thats why you look so...business-like
    (professional).
  • Im supposed to (I should) work at the college to
cover some of my tuition (pay some of the money
    for my education).

1. Vocabulary (continued)
  • Some people get scholarships (money given to good
students to help with their education), and there
are student loans (money lent to students to help
    them with their education)...and work-study
programs (programs which allow students to work
in order to cover their education cost) like
    mine.
  • Because of budget cuts (decrease in the money to
be spent), we had to cancel (stop) our work-study
program this year... You still have your partial
scholarship ( part of a scholarship).
  • But I was counting on (depending on) that money
to help pay for tuition, books,
  • We do have some alternatives (other ways to solve
a problem). Sometimes there are jobs off-campus
(outside the university) that come in. Why dont
you check our bulletin board (notice board)
    outside?
  • Uh-huh...in the hallway (corridor, or long narrow
pass). And Ill keep your resume here on file
(put your professional information on record)
