Host City
  • Ankara
  • Ankara is the capital city of Turkey, the
    country's second largest city after Istanbul and
    has had a population of almost 4 million people.
  • The region's vibrant history can be traced back
    to the Bronze Age and artifacts have been
    discovered in the region dating back prior to
    1200 BC.
  • Because of its long and fascinating history,
    there are many museums to visit and sights to see
    in Ankara and the surrounding region.

  • Middle East Technical University
  • Middle East Technical University was founded 1956
    to contribute to the development of Turkey and
    Middle East countries and especially to train
    people so as to create a skilled workforce in the
    fields of natural and social sciences.
  • METU has become one of the distinguished and
    respectable institutions of Turkey. And is home
    to over 21,000 students.

Program Overview
  • International Summer School
  • METU's Summer Term is open to all international
    students. Students from METU's partner
    universities are especially welcomed. A wide
    range of courses from METU's catalog, all taught
    in English, are offered, including technical and
    science courses, some of which involve field
    work.  
  • In conjunction with this Summer Term, METU offers
    a special "International Summer School" Students
    may apply for this International Summer School if
    they want to take "Beginning Turkish I (TFL 271)"
    an intensive 3-credit Turkish language course
    and/or "Contemporary Turkey Turkish State and
    Society (IR 245)", a 3-credit course on Modern
    Turkey. Both TFL 271 and IR 245 are courses in
    METU's catalog and open to visiting/exchange
    students.

Program Details
  • Dates 2009 TBA (usually runs end of June to
    August)
  • Classes
  • All courses offered during the Summer School are
    opened to students with necessary prerequisites.
    Summer School courses are also attended by METU
    students. All courses have Turkish students in
    each class giving the visiting Summer School
    students an opportunity to meet local students.
    3-credit courses meet 7 hours weekly for 6 weeks
    or total of 42 hours (this is equivalent to
    regular semester course). The language of
    instruction at METU is English.

Credit Transfer Information
  • Some of the courses offered in this program have
    been pre-approved for credit by the Faculty of
    Arts.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to speak
    with their faculty advisor about credit transfer.
  • Credit transfer is done by the Faculty and is not
    guaranteed.

Accommodation
  • Participants are accommodated in campus
    dormitory, two per room. Rooms will be in METU's
    newest dormitories. Students who wish to live off
    campus will be responsible for finding their own
    accommodation. However, generally in Turkey
    landlords tend not to rent their apartments for a
    short period of time.

  • Cost to the U of A
  • 150.00 CND - Application fee
  • 937.20 Tuition for EXCH 811
  • Cost to METU
  • 50 USD (Includes administrative and orientation
    program including a tour of Ankara, visits to
    local museums, two lunches and ticket to a
    cultural activity, etc)
  • 460-600 USD - Accommodation

Application Process
  • Attend one of the mandatory group advising
    sessions for Summer Abroad in France.
  • Submit completed application to Education Abroad
    Program by March 16th, 2008.
  • If you are selected to participate in program you
    will then be required to complete the application
    to METU.

Application Requirements
  • GPA requirements
  • 2.7 current
  • 2.5 cumulative
  • If you are in the Faculty of Science you must
    have completed 15 of course work at the time of
    application.
