40 Developmental Assets

• Originally developed and pilot tested by the
  Children First initiative in St. Louis Park,
  Minnesota
• Formed and organized in 1993, Children First
  began building the developmental assets
  identified by Search Institute.
• 1996 asset building brought into individual
  neighborhoods within cities

• 40 Developmental Assets grouped in 8 Categories
• Further Categorized into 2 Groups 20 External and
  20 Internal Assets

  Canada
• Average youth in USA experiences only 18 of the
  40 assets
• Overall, 62 of youth surveyed have fewer than 20
  of the 40 assets

• Relationship between number of assets present in
  a young persons life and the degree he/she will
  develop in positive and healthy ways
• The fewer the number of assets present, the
  greater the possibility youth will engage in
  negative behaviors such as drug use, unsafe sex,
  and violence
