  • Does function follow form?
  • Which comes first when one is creating or
    sculpting something? Form or function?

6
Lets explore that
  • Artists create objects to satisfy their need for
self expressionwhether they create a functional
object or a non-functional art form.
  • Even if it is functional, more often than not, it
is still decorated or possesses qualities of
artistic expression (African masks and ceramics)

Beauty -
  • But adding artistic impulses to a 3d object is
not confined to the fine arts beauty is a
foundation for sculpture, but also for many
everyday forms, like cars, furniture, buildings
  • The artists still organize elements, shapes,
textures, colors, and space according to the same
principles of harmony, balance, that are used in
    the fine arts.
  • However, although these principles can be applied
to useful objects, the need for utility often
restricts the creative latitude of the artist

Louis Sullivan, architect
  • Said, Form follows function
  • Influenced design for the last few decades.
  • Most designers create forms that express and aid
function, while making the forms aesthetically
    pleasing
  • It can happen, however, on a case by case basis
(depending on the object) that the emphasis can
be placed on the expressive design without
    sacrificing the functionchairs
