Title: Learning in a TrimesterBlock Schedule

1
Learning in a Trimester/Block Schedule
2
Trimester Information
  • The concept of trimesters is not new, it is
currently being implemented in hundreds of high
    schools nationally in a 3 x 5 setup.
  • It is the perfect blend between traditional and
    block schedules.
  • Length of class is similar to college.

4
Trimester Information
  • The goals of block scheduling align with NEASC
standards and New Hampshire school approval
    standards.
  • Allows for extended learning opportunities and
    alternative credits (i.e. learning off-site
    through non-traditional activities).

5
Why Change to Trimesters?
  • Reduces academic load (from 7 periods to 5
periods) to reduce the stress for students.
  • Creates room for more course offerings for
    students.
  • Creates a longer class period to teach in more
effective ways using a variety of strategies to
    increase comprehension.

6
Advantages of a Trimester Schedule
  • Fewer classes leads to increase in student focus
by offering an uninterrupted block of teaching
    time with fewer distractions.
  • With current staffing unchanged, lower
    student-to-teacher ratio in targeted areas.
  • More student remediation opportunities.
  • Students can earn a total of 30 credits during a
4 year period as opposed to the 28 credits
possible with current high school schedules
(selective colleges want to see 28 credits on
    transcripts).

7
More Advantages
  • More flexibility in student scheduling.
  • No additional staff needed for implementation of
    trimesters.
  • Students have more time for active engagement and
participation in the form of labs, small group
    discussions, and other activities.

8
Goals of a Daily Trimester Schedule
  • Improve understanding of material through more
    student centered activities.
  • Increase opportunities for elective courses.
  • In most cases, students will have fewer core
content courses in any one trimester. Fewer
    classes less homework.
  • Provide a more personalized and more relevant
    high school experience.

9
Additional Goals
  • Teachers have a smaller caseload of students
    which increases personalization (teachers know
more about you including how you learn best).
  • Creates time to be able to use creative and
varied teaching styles to improve student
    learning.

10
Trimester Schedule
  • 70 minute periods (60 days) 4200 minutes vs. 48
minute periods (90 days) 4320 minutes in a
traditional semester (2.5 classes less, but 60
    less transitions).
  • Students take 4-5 classes 70 minutes long (7.5
    credits possible).
  • Students will take end of trimester exams much
like mid-terms and finals as they do now.

11
A Look at Credits
  • A current semester class that earns ½ will meet
    for one term.
  • A current full-year class that earns 1 full
credit will meet for two terms.
  • A few classes will meet for 3 trimesters and earn
    1 ½ credits. (AP courses)

23
Other Benefits
  • The schedule allows for creative and progressive
    school-to-career and community service (service
learning) opportunities in junior and senior
    years.
  • This schedule would allow students to pursue Real
World Learning without missing class time.

24
More Benefits
  • Students could take two years each of two foreign
languages, or they could add a 5th year in a
subject like math, English, science, or foreign
    languages.
  • Students can take more advanced math courses
    without doubling up.

25
Concerns
  • Will there be Study Halls?
  • What about Early Release and Open Study?
  • Will there be a change in the Attendance Policy?
  • Will school vacations change?
