What are the implications to TESCO of poor
quality FUEL being sold?
4
Effect of poor quality?
  • Trading standards officials have launched an
investigation after drivers complained that they
    had been sold "contaminated" fuel.
  • Hundreds of drivers have also been contacting the
BBC after filling up their cars with the
    allegedly contaminated fuel.
  • Some car dealerships say they are trying to
repair damaged cars, many of which are now off
the road, but the parts they need are now in
    short supply.
  • Compensation
  • "I want compensation and reimbursement. I need my
car for my work and it has been back to Saab four
times in the last two weeks."

5
Traditional methods of quality control
  • Post-production quality control, where a quality
controller or control team randomly checks
finished goods for defects, etc. This is a
wasteful procedure, as faults are only found at
    the end.
  • A slight improvement on this method is process
control, where the controller or team samples
products throughout the process of production.

6
Total Quality Management (TQM)
  • TQM involves everyone in the process, improving
the motivation of all staff. Faults are spotted
    and sorted out quickly.
  • Costs are involved, though, as workers need to be
educated and trained to measure and monitor
    quality and seek improvement.
  • Kaizen a Japanese idea of continual improvement
is the ultimate interpretation of TQM. Workers
are encouraged to suggest improvements as often
as possible, with the result that possible
concerns are dealt with before they turn into
    problems.
