What is a Portfolio
  • More then what the teach us at UBC
  • A collection of documents that attest to
    performance and proficiencies
  • In short Show me what you can do May include
    notes, sketches, letters, photos video etc.

  • Learning
  • Purpose to document learning that has occurred in
    a class
  • Career
  • Purpose to demonstrate that individual has
    work-related skills, abilities, qualities
    necessary to fulfill the potential of specific
    job

  • How Can we have our students create portfolios?
  • Portfolios are a the new reality. Required to
    graduate in BC.

  • Clear purpose
  • Requires students to describe content
  • Evidence of process
  • Level appropriate activities
  • Reasonable space restrictions

  • Sets you apart from other candidates
  • Shows the interviewer what you think is important
  • What to Include?
  • Only evidence of skills, ability and qualities
    relevant to specific job

This High Jump Trophy was purchased and Presented
to me by the students Of the Port Moody Senior
Football team In 2001 It was presented to me for
my valiant effort to Climb and Jump over a 8 foot
high fence

    students, staff and administration to make us
    better teachers
  • Benefits of receiving feedback from students
  • They will tell you what you are doing right
  • They will tell you what you need to improve on

How to get class Feedback
  • Feed back on Presentations
  • At end of presentation give student 2-3 minute to
    write down the main points. Have what you
    consider your main points (SLO) on overhead Share
    overhead ask what students wrote down. Stress
    that it is not a test

Instant Questionnaire
  • Write a few statements about what you think
    students might be feeling about your presentation
  • Label questions with letters then provide answer
    key 1 strongly agree etc.
  • Collect the papers and analyze the data

  • Ask for a show of hands for feedback
  • Put your hand up if you want me to

  • Do a questionnaire
  • Can be done at end of year Might be good to do it
    at natural breaks in semester
  • What is on the questionnaire is up to you
  • What topics should be included.

  • Do not be afraid to ask for feedback
  • Shows you want to improve
  • Agree to ground rules scope of feedback, who
    else will see or hear the feedback etc.
  • You are in charge off feedback process and it
    must remain constructive
