DEAR PARENTS-
Reading Update
Another terrific week! We managed to stay in a
routine for most of the days. Next week we have
Think Link testing planned. This is a city wide
event during which the children will test on a
format very similar to the Spring Stanford test.
This gives us a good overview of where the
children are and a focus for planning towards the
Spring tests.
Everyone is just zipping right along in a chapter
book with a few children reading picture books
and non fiction books. I do require that everyone
test on two chapter books, two picture books, and
one non fiction book during the grading period.
These test scores will be part of the Reading
grade. The books must be title the children read
themselves, not a title I read to them!
LUNCH NEWS----- The goodies and snacks have
arrived!! This is wonderful news. We can now
purchase chips, cookies, rice krispie treats, ice
cream, and popsicles for 50 , and drinks for
75. Just a note- some of the kiddoes are buying
two or 3 items and your lunch money may dwindle
quickly. (I also told them I was going to tell
you they are eating the goodies first and then
not eating very much lunch.)
Another way we get grades in Reading is from our
Response Log. We write in this folder after we
read everyday. This week we had a lesson on how
to read, jot down reminders, and then write in
the folder. The task was to write about what was
read each day and then write about the reminders
(connections). This first effort in the Response
Log has resulted in some low grades! For the most
part, the low grades were due to not following
instructions and not writing enough. We read for
30 minutes and writing only 6 words about the
book is not acceptable! Dont panic parents, this
will get better! Seeing these grades this week
will get the attention of most of the kids and
they will work a little harder next week.
GRADES We do have enough graded papers now to
send a grade sheet home on Monday. It will
include AR tests taken and a chart of the grades.
It is too early to send averages yet!
ART Needs
Ms. Miller is teaching a series of lessons this
year on drawing portraits. This is a phenomenal
experience (My daughters self portrait is
hanging in my classroom!) The children have been
asked to provide a photo for this BUT DONT SEND
ONE. I need to take a photo of each child to use
for math class and I will just have double prints
made and let the kids have a copy! (In fact, I
took these photos today!)
