The IR in the Digital Library

  • Repository Manager
  • University of Edinburgh

2
Aims
  • Defining digital repositories
  • Explore the different flavours of repositories
  • The repository ecosystem
  • Some thoughts on the future

3
A repository is.
  • .a set of services that a university offers to
the members of its community for the management
and dissemination of digital materials created by
the institution and its community members.
  • Lynch, 2003
  • http//www.arl.org/newsltr/226/ir.html

4
What factors define a repository?
  • Purpose Scope
  • Content
  • (Text-based objects/
  • Images/ source data/
  • other)
  • - Motivation
  • (Dissemination,
  • Preservation,
  • Management)
  • Patronage

  • Geographical
  • (Funding council Y)
  • Scholarship
  • (Discipline Z)

Digital Repository
  • Further defined by
  • Collection Access policies

Repository ecosystems
  • Embryonic stage- no standard model
  • Many different manifestations of IRs- confusing!
  • No so much The Matrix (seamless
interoperability), but more like The Matrices.
  • Mostly overcome the technological problems, now
we have to develop user communities.

15
Questions
  • How will IRs be integrated into digital
    libraries?
  • How will IRs interact with other repositories?
  • How do we build up a user community?
