2
Harmonic Function
  • On Tuesday we discussed harmonic functions in
terms of planets in orbit around a given tonic

3
Harmonic Function
  • An analogy can also be made between the basic
parts of speech and the various harmonic
    functions
  • Each word plays a role in forming a sentence
similarly, each chord plays a role in forming a
    harmonic phrase

4
Harmonic Function
  • Consider the following sentence
  • The scary witch frightened the young children.
  • Adj. ? Noun ? Verb ? Adj. ? Noun
  • (Subject) (Dir.
    Obj.)
  • Now consider the following harmonic progression
  • I ? viio ? I ? vi ? ii ? V 7 ? I
  • T? D ?T ? P ? P ? D ? T

Non-Chord Tones (course packet, p. 118)
  • Sing the following scale-degree pattern
  • 5 6 5 4 3 4 3 2 1
  • Now, Marians students sing the pattern while
  • Karels students sing 1 and hold it out
  • Dans students sing 3 and hold it out
  • Jonathans students sing 5 and hold it out

8
Non-Chord Tones (course packet, p. 118)
  • Tones that are not a member of the chord (Root,
third, fifth, seventh) at any given point
  • There are several types of non-chord tones for
T109 we will deal with two basic types
  • Neighbor tones
  • Passing tones

9
Non-Chord Tones (course packet, p. 118)
  • Neighbor tones are used to embellish a single
tone, and may appear above or below the tone
  • At example A, the neighbor tone A embellishes the
    chord-tone G of the I chord in C-major
  • At example B, the note G is a chord-tone of both
the I chord and the V 6 chord in C-major

10
Non-Chord Tones (course packet, p. 118)
  • Passing tones are used to fill the space between
two other tones. Usually the space being filled
is a third, either ascending or descending, and
the passing tone is given whatever scale-degree
    lies in between
  • At example A, the passing tone F fills the space
    between the chord-tones G and E
  • At example B, the note G is a chord tone of the V
6 chord, and the note E is a chord tone of the vi
6 chord. The passing-tone F fills the space
    between these notes

11
Non-Chord Tones (course packet, p. 118)
  • Non-Chord tones usually appear in a metrically
    unaccented position
  • This usually means that the non-chord tone
appears on the second (or third) subdivision of a
given beat, or a weak beat within the given meter

12
Non-Chord Tones / Melodic Harmonization
  • Consider the following melody
  • Identify the implied harmonies for each measure,
    using Roman numerals
  • Identify the harmonic function of each chord,
    labeled T, P, or D
  • Identify all NCTs in the melody either as
passing tones or neighbor tones (labeled PT or NT)
