Title: 101 Factors and Greatest Common Factors

1
10-1 Factors and Greatest Common Factors
2
Background Information
  • Read pg 558 Geometry Integration

3
Example 1
  • Find the factors of 32
  • 1 x 32
  • 2 x 16
  • 4 x 8
  • Therefore the factors of 32 are 1,2,4,8,16,32

4
Prime Numbers
  • Numbers whose factors are 1 and itself
  • Ex 3,5,7,11,13,17,19,

5
Composite Numbers
  • Whole numbers that have more than 2 factors.
  • Ex 32 was a composite number.
  • The s 0 and 1 are considered neither prime nor
    composite.

6
Prime Factorization
  • Factoring a number until there are no composite
    numbers left.
  • Use a factor tree.

7
Prime Factorization Practice
  • 160 -70

9
Factoring Monomials
  • A monomial is in factored form when it is
expressed as the product of prime numbers and
variables. No variable may have an exponent gt 1

10
Find the Greatest Common Factor
  • Greatest Common Factor---the greatest that is a
factor of all of the integers.
  • Example find the GCF of 84 and 70
  • First find the Prime factorization of each
    using a factor tree.
  • Second Find the Prime Factors that they have in
    common and multiply them together

11
Example
  • Find the GCF of
  • 54 63 180

12
Refer to the Book
  • Pg 560 example 6
