5Headlines in the news
- Schools are stuck in the 20th century. Students
have rushed into the 21st. How can schools catch
up and provide students with a relevant
education? - Marc Prensky
6- Our classrooms of today are still using methods
that we used over 30 years ago..
7Retool instruction, or U.S. will
fail
8How do we prepare our students to become not
only readers and writers, but editors and
collaborators as well?
9We are currently preparing students for jobs that
dont yet exist . . .

11Who said that.
- I am not complacent at all John. I have gone
through experiences such as this for a very long
time. I know I am right. I make the good
argument, write the wise articles, and the
persuasive letters. And sometimes I feel as
though I am preaching to a stack of wood. People
do not easily embrace change. Convincing them to
turn in a new direction requires a patience and
persistence that tax everyone. It does not help
matters that the course we are attempting to
follow could get us all hanged - Ben Franklin talking to John Adams , June 7, 1776
12- Educators need to be genuine, authentic leaders
that will infuse meaning in what we do as
teachers. We all need to tell our success
stories, assist others in helping, influence and
inspire people around us.
13What does the Dept. of Commerce have to say about
education? Where does it rank ?
14Learning To Change..Changing To Learn
15The fact is, our young people are woefully under
prepared for the demands of todays workplace,

learning community takes risks together. An
environment that fosters innovation and
creativity. A way to discuss "Big Ideas." An
atmosphere of respect where people are
comfortable sharing their ideas. A place where
we can learn from our own and each others
mistakes and feel comfortable doing so. A place
where everyone is interested in learning. A
place to share. Exchanging ideas.

69The Beluga Whale
70- Howie,
- My 6th grade tech class did a web evaluation
sheet on the "Facts About Beluga Whales" site you
shared with us. They still thought it was great.
They Googled the prof that wrote it and were
still convinced it was trustworthy. Finally, we
did the attached website comparison chart with
two other websites, and they finally figured out
that it was bogus. I really believe that cross
checking sites is the key, especially for kids.
Thanks for the good information we got in the
class. - Denise Y. Everhart
71While other species of true whales are
endangered, the Beluga population is thriving.
This is due, in part, to the extremely bitter
taste of Beluga meat which discourages hunting of
the animals.Dr. Anatole Blickson, Chairperson,
Department of Marine Zoology, University of
Finland.

Development
107Proof of Concept
- Consider a tool you want to explore
- Select a partner to create a "mock up" of
something you might use in your role as an
educatoror that students might create
themselves. - Consider collaborating with others who teach
different grades or different subjects Remember
you need to have a product in 30 minutes, so
don't let little details bog you down.
108- Create a proof-of-concept that meets the
following criteria - Utilizes at least one Web 2.0 tool
- Is tailored for a specific educational purpose
- Illustrates how you or students would use the
tool - Demonstrates the concept sufficiently that other
educators might implement it

- Zach started his own nonprofit organization four
years ago after a hurricane hit Florida. He asked
his mother if they could donate their water
bottles, and he gathered more from neighbors, an
earnest little redheaded boy pulling his red
wagon behind him. By the end, they had 27
truckloads of aid.
112- Zach has met three presidents and was invited to
President George W. Bush's farewell address this
winter. Last night, he was scheduled to visit
Elton John at his concert at Nationals Park and
accept a 25,000 check. And an Emmy-award winning
journalist, Michael Guillen, is making a 5
million film about the Little Red Wagon.

116And finally
- Is the leadership capable of bringing about this
change?
117If you are that Leader..
- from the book The Backdoor to Enlightenment
- Eight Steps to Living Your Dreams and Changing
Your World
118Will you be the 10th person?
- For every nine people who denounce innovation,
only one will encourage it. - For every nine people who do things the way they
have always been done, only one will ever wonder
if there is a better way. - For every nine people who stand in line in front
of a locked building, only one will ever come
around and check the back door. - Our progress as a species rests squarely on the
shoulders of that tenth person. The nine are
satisfied with things they are told are valuable.
- Person 10 determines for himself what has value.
