  • The Scheme awards are franchised by Staffordshire
    University to 6 Regional Colleges.

  • The SURF Link Tutors visit the SURF partner
    colleges and institutions at which the Higher
    National Diploma/Higher National Certificate
    Scheme operates to discuss the award with both
    students and staff. These officers are the
    primary link between the SURF partner institution
    and the University and help to ensure the smooth
    running of the scheme there.

Year content
  • First year is common to all routes and gives a
    basic grounding in computing principles
  • Second year involves
  • A specialist project (HND only)
  • Specialist modules
  • Core modules building on the first year

  • Each year of each award comprises a framework of
    modules
  • Each module is worth 15 credits
  • Modules are graded as follows
  • gt69 Distinction
  • 53-69 Merit
  • 40-52 Pass
  • lt40 Fail
  • Each Year on HNC has 75 credits
  • Require 150 credits to gain HNC
  • Each year on HND has 120 credits
  • Require 240 credits to gain an HND.

Assignment Hand In
  • All assignments should be handed in at reception
    on the second floor of the Octagon building. with
    effect from September 2004  
  • The Faculty deadline for receipt of all
    assignments is 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Extenuating Circumstances
  • If for any valid reason you are unable to
  • submit a piece of work
  • attend an in course test or exam
  • have problems which are detrimental to your work
  • Inform the Level leader in advance of deadline
  • Submit an Extenuating Circumstance Form
  • Available from Business Support Office
  • You MUST provide supporting documentary evidence
  • Case will be presented to Extenuating
    Circumstances panel. If accepted the student may
  • Be allowed to take relevent assessments as if for
    the first time, or if re-assed work as if for the
    second time.
  • Have recommended grades for each relevent
    assessment provided the Exam Board is satisfied
    there is sufficient evidence to arrive at a fair
    estimate of the appropriate grades

Plagiarism
  • Representation of another persons work, without
    acknowledgement of the source, as the students
    own for the purpose of satisfying formal
    assessment requirements.
  • Examples include
  • Copying another persons work
  • Using more than one phrase from another persons
    work without acknowledgement
  • Changing few words or the order of presentation
    of another persons work without acknowledgement
  • Submission as if it were the students own of work
    obtained from the internet or other forms of IT.
    This includes graphs, digital images.
  • Submission of work which has been previously
    assessed for a different award or module
  • A student who allows another student to copy
    their work would deemed to be guilty of
    plagiarism
  • Plagiarism is strictly FORBIDDEN

    variety of subjects.
  • This will be followed after six weeks with an
    induction update session.
  • Towards the end of the year there will be a
    session on route/award choices for year 2.

The Academic Thread
  • The academic thread will be delivered through two
    modules

  • The modules concerned are titled
  • Computing and In Society
  • Computing and IT in the Workplace.
  • These modules are designed to develop
    transferable skills, to set the other modules in
    context and to increase awareness of legal, moral
    and professional issues within the computing
    fiel. Students will develop a portfolio of work
    which will include a CV. and presentation.

The Personal Tutoring Thread

  • The personal tutors are members of the module
    team. 1 hour per week (12 hours) will be given to
    a tutorial group of 10 students. There will also
    be scheduled laboratory sessions.
  • Tutors will
  • monitor attendance
  • follow up absence.
  • Tutors will work closely with the level leader,
    Rose King to monitor the academic profile of
    their tutees
  • After five weeks and ten weeks, the personal
    tutors will arrange to meet each of their tutees
    for 15 minutes These sessions will be used to
    support and encourage the recording of personal
    development plans.

Top up HND - Degree
  • Computing Technologies Scheme
  • An honours degree in three years.

Bridging course
  • The bridging courses are offered to students who
    hold a relevant HND.
  • They are also franchised to colleges
    internationally.
  • Many students enter a final year after following
    a bridging route.
  • The degree is achieved in four years the same
    timescale as for students entering the degree
    scheme at year 1.
