• Poetry has both rhythm and rhyme.
• A couplet is a two-lined rhyming poem.
• When you put two couplets together, you have a
  quatrain.

Planning

• Choose a topic.
• Think about that topic.
• Get a clear image in your mind. It should be a
  very specific image, like a snapshot of your
  thought.

Writing

• Write a sentence or phrase that tells about the
  image in your mind.
• Bouncing, bopping through the snow
• List several rhyming words for the last word in
  the sentence.
• Go, know, low, slow, flow,

• Write another sentence or phrase that completes
  the thought using a rhyming word from the list.
• Racing down the hill we go.
• To keep the rhythm try to use the same number of
  syllables in each line.

• Find exciting describing words and vivid verbs to
  express your exact thought.
• Write another set of rhyming lines to complete
  the quatrain.

Revise

• Check your poem to see if it describes the image
  you had in your mind.
• Check to see that you have chosen the most
  interesting words possible.
• Check your spelling and punctuation
• Check to see if your words have rhythm.
