Title: SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY PROFILE ASSESSMENT

1
SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • STEVE ERXLEBEN
  • SOUTH RIVER HIGH SCHOOL

2
THE SEAHAWK REPUTATION
  • When most outsiders hear the name South River,
    they are normally very impressed
  • In general, most parents and others see South
River as a good school that excels at meeting
state goals and mandated improvement standards
  • Our students also perform very effectively on
    H.S.A.s, P.S.A.T.s, A.P. Testing, and other
    measurable standardized exams
  • Along with Severna Park and Broadneck, we are one
of the top schools in the County and in the State

3
A.Y.P. and H.S.A. Data
  • According to approved State Standards and the No
Child Left Behind act, South River once again
proficiently met AYP in 2006 (South River AYP)
  • Also, over 80 of out students passed the
Government and Biology High school Assessment
including a 94 rate in Government, the highest
of any County High school (South River Gov H.S.A.)

4
Algebra and English?????
  • According to the same data source, our H.S.A.
Algebra and English scores only hovered around
    75 passing (2006 English) (2006 Algebra)
  • In both courses, student achievement can greatly
be effected by the incorporation of higher levels
of technology in both student work and
    pedagogical practices.

5
How Much Technology is available at South River?
  • In general, South River would rank as on target
when evaluating the amount of technology
    available in school
  • In terms of the ratio between computers to
students, we are a 3.8/1 where the state average
in 3.4 and the goal of the state is 5/1
  • In all there are 114 student-available computers
in labs and the media center respectively
  • Internet connectivity is also quite high

6
The Functional problem
  • Even though the study by the MSDE has us
relatively on target with regards to technology,
    the data may be misleading
  • Even though it grades teacher functional levels
very high, this may be untrue
  • According to my study using the NCREL Learning
with technology School Profile, the States data
    may be wrong
  • Learning With Technology Profile Tool Results

7
Functional Problem
  • When looking at the results, it seems we graded
lower than average on 4 relatively important
    indicators
  • These indicators included Teacher operability,
    Teacher functionality, Teacher organization, and
    assessment
  • Even though the state believes our teachers have
the right amount of skill, the levels of
integration over the entire school is not being
    achieved

8
4 Recommendations to the S.I.T. Team
  • Teacher In-service Days specializing in the
    integration of technology into Pedagogical
    Practices
  • Increase level of collaboration between teachers
and media specialist (especially Algebra and
    English)
  • Purchase of 1 LCD Presenter for each classroom
  • The Media Specialist must be part of the S.I.T.
    Team

9
Pedagogical Practices
  • Administration should uphold the use of
    technology when performing teacher evaluations
  • Specific short lessons (like the character
education in the beginning of the year)
  • Using approved faculty meeting time and
    in-service days
  • Incorporate into discipline team meetings and
    vertical teaming

10
Collaborating with Media Specialist
  • The Media Specialist must be highly trained in
    technology interdisciplinary pedagogy
  • Must also understand and be knowledgeable of
    curriculum and pacing guides
  • Must work closely with team leaders and
    department chairs
  • Schedule must also allow for guest speaking and
spot duty in the classroom to model best
    practices
  • According to the MSDE study, a large amount of
teachers would rather collaborate with a fellow
    teacher about technology integration

11
LCD Presenters
  • According to the State Study on technology
practices, our school only has 28 presenters
  • Many of these presenters are on carts and take
    time to hook up
  • They are take up a large amount of space
  • A lack of this tool makes viewing student work
and the use of technology in the classroom very
    difficult

12
Media Specialist on the S.I.T. Team
  • Even though School Improvement is a very broad
agenda for this team, technology has a large part
    of it
  • The Media Specialist has the highest knowledge of
best practices with regards to technology in the
    school
  • This knowledge and the ability to incorporate it
is not just important to teachers, but to clubs,
activities, athletics, and other school functions
  • Technology has the ability to improve the school
