Title: "Nothing in life is to be feared,

1
"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to
be understood. Now is the time to understand
more, so that we may fear less." Marie
Curie 1867-1934
Challenge instead of Threat
2
CLIMATE CHANGE HYPE to fight apathy, skepticism,
3
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful
committed individuals can change the world. In
fact, it's the only thing that ever
has." Margaret Mead 1901-1978

Climate Change Science Conference Portland Sep
07 an opportunity to meet and to share
experience and knowledge, to listen and learn
from each other COMMUNICATION talks, art
display, discussions, play, demos COLLABORATION
scientists, conservationists, managers, policy
makers, communicators

Mary Hassett features the image of an Evening
Grosbeak and its sonogram stiched on cotton and
silk fabrics with Mozart's "Requiem" printed on
mulberry paper. To quote Marie's statement
about the piece "Global warming, logging,
mining and acid rain have all contributed to
the loss of forests that the Evening Grosbeak
depends on. Since the mid-1980's their
population has dramatically declined from 17
million to less than 4 million".

TNC Climate Change Science Team (5 people
2) Center for climate change science information
and conservation planning tools Team
Functions 1)  Serving as the gateway to the best
and most mission-relevant science on potential
climate change impacts. 2)  Developing tools and
approaches for using this information in
conservation planning and management. 3)
Testing conservation planning tools
and management approaches on platform sites and
monitoring success. 4)  Providing broad climate
change and conservation learning opportunities
for the field and external partners. 5)  Providin
g "science for climate change policy".

TEAM FUNCTION 1
1)  Serving as the gateway to the best and most
mission-relevant science on potential climate
change impacts. Lead Chris Zganjar in charge of
creating database and web interface Source
collaborations with academia and agencies and
original work by TNC scientists in collaboration
with others Team strength modeling (Dominique
Bachelet, Barry Baker), model validation (Barry
Baker, Patrick Gonzales), data gathering and
analysis (Barry Baker, Patrick Gonzales) Field
role LET US KNOW WHAT YOU NEED, WORK WITH US

TEAM FUNCTION 2
2)  Developing tools and approaches for using
this information in conservation planning and
management. This work is done in close
coordination with the field, with the team
primary role being to help interpret the data and
their limitations. Field plays the key role in
innovating new planning and management strategies
to respond to potential changes.  Examples of
this type of work include the CAP work that Jeff
DeBlieu and Patrick Gonzales have been involved
with, and the regional and national assessments
and planning that Barry Baker is doing
10
TEAM FUNCTION 3
3)  Testing conservation planning tools
and management approaches on platform sites and
monitoring success. Proposed sites (Capital
Campaign) Coral Triangle, Meso-American forests,
Eastern US coastal zone, North American
Grasslands, and the Upper Yangtze River basin.
What we learn will be fed back into our
understanding of what kind of data and research
is needed to advance our understanding, and to
refine conservation planning tools and
management.  ex. Rod Salm et al's work in the
Coral Triangle next year, grassland conference,
ocean acidification workshop
11
TEAM FUNCTION 4
4)  Providing broad climate change and
conservation learning opportunities for the
field and external partners. Lead Jeff DeBlieu,
Climate Change learning networks ex. working
with the Marine Initiative on a Sea Level Rise
network working with WAFOO on a
grassland/prairie network
12
TEAM FUNCTION 5
5)  Providing "science for climate change
policy" Sarah Murdock's panel tomorrow
morning on going work with external affairs on
biodiversity impacts with different emissions
scenarios to inform TNC's CO2 cap goals
on-going collaboration with the field to provide
information on carbon management potential,
costs, and measurement approaches.
