The ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeter

• The ROD motherboard is used in the readout of all
  Liquid Argon calorimeter components and in the
  Tile Calorimeter
• The construction of the Calorimeters is well
  advanced
• Start first commissioning phase in March 2005

32 bits at 40 MHz

• Each ROD board is connected to 8 Front-End boards
• The incoming data is analysed in the Processing
  Units
• The output data is sent via Transition Modules to
  a Read-Out PC

Prototype and System Testing at the EMF

• 9 prototypes built
• Extensive tests on single board
• level in Geneva
• Complete system test
• Back-End Crate Test at EMF
• Many tests done
• Data transfer in normal and
• staging mode (2 PUs)
• 3 boards operated simultanously
• Power consumption
• More important tests to be done until September
• Data transfer at full rate with Optimal Filtering
  and Calibration code
• Synchronisation with trigger system (TTC)
• Send real and monitoring data through VME
• Verify correct hardware functionality / extend

Real Data Taking at the Testbeam

Status of The ROD Motherboard Project

• Current activities
• System tests at EMF and testbeam to finalize the
  design
• Extension and debugging of the firmware
• input FPGA, output controller, VME interface
• Transition to next project phase
• ROD motherboard production
• The ROD system had a Production Readiness Review
  last week
• Main results
• we can start purchasing the board components
• The board assembly shall wait until all important
  tests are finished

Production Activities In The Near Future

• Order all components through CERN and store them
• Find a company for the board assembly ? CERN

• Finally 250 ROD motherboards will be assembled
  (April 05)
• Then we are done? No...

Summary

• The ROD prototypes are working well in test stand
  and at test beam ? no hardware changes expected
• The ROD project is going into production phase
• Serial testing and assembly in spring 2005 will
  be a demanding task
• Schedule in time to deliver a ROD system for
  detector commissioning
