Wonder begins with e
  • The word, wonder begins with the letter e.

what e is all about Efficiency, Electronic,
    Enabled
  • A complex integration of information and
communication technologies which are often not
visible to the front-end user define the

the nEw Economy
  • Building an eEnterprise is especially necessary
for businesses that seek to be relevant in the
    New Economy. Factors follow
  • Economy New organizations are flexible, dynamic
and dramatically lower in land, labor and capital
requirements. Its the quality and productivity,
rather than the volume, of workers that define
    the new economy
  • Politics The politically powerful controlled the
means toproduction. We are moving into a new
information and knowledge is more accessible and
the creation of knowledge and constant learning
is made easier, empowerment is made more tenable
  • Culture New workplace designs and telecommuting
afford more time for leisure and family. Culture
is based less on capital attainment and more on
    knowledge acquisition
  • Technology Early technology implementation
devalued workers as it was used to replace people
    and reduce costs. Emerging technology
    characteristics include interactivity of work
immediacy of information for work and decisions
    accessibility of information - just-in-time
    (pull) and broadcast (push)

Bringing e in
  • Identify your unique processes. Take your
enterprise as a project and sketch a Work
Breakdown Structure to identify tasks, and then,
    processes
  • Conduct a process evaluation. How does technology
enable each process? What are the things that
technology cannot do and the things technology
cannot do better than usual convention? What can
    technology do for each process?
  • What array of information and communication
technologies does the process evaluation throw
    up?
  • What are your overall technology needs?
  • What is the cost implication of the technology
    needs?
  • What is your roll out plan? A phased approach
becomes necessary when funds are limited

5
Challenges of the e
  • Convergence - how to conduct business when the
lines and boundaries blur as technologies, media,
and even industries converge. The internetworked,
    interactive business environment places critical
    new demands on businesses.
  • Innovation - how to stay competitive when a
surprising number of new products are entering
the market that create new forms of competition.
  • Immediacy - how to respond to the consumers
immediate needs. Customer expectations now demand
immediate response and superior customer service.
  • Globalization - how to address the global market.
The eCommerce model defies geographic boundaries
and barriers. This is an opportunity but also a
    tremendous challenge
