    component of the portfolio

Purpose of the Oral Presentation
  • Share your portfolio with faculty, students and
    other stakeholders
  • Demonstrate that you are able to make a
    professional presentation

  • The Faculty Advisor
  • The Second Reader
  • The Moderator
  • The Presenter

Role of the Advisor
  • Determines when the written portfolio is complete
    and is ready for oral presentation
  • Advises presenter on which as aspects of
    portfolio to highlight
  • Assists presenter in giving an excellent
    presentation
  • May review the power point presentation and
    provide feedback prior to delivery
  • Advise presenter regarding presentation style etc.

Role of the Second Reader
  • A faculty member other than the advisor
  • Evaluates the FINAL written portfolio and the
    oral presentation
  • Does NOT proofread, edit or assist the student to
    prepare the written or oral portfolio
  • Provides a second opinion on the quality of the
    work and assists the advisor in assigning the
    grade
  • Selected during November/December of second year

Selection of the Second Reader
  • Students responsibility to select the second
    reader
  • Each faculty member serves as the second reader
    for 5 students
  • Request early-you snooze you lose
  • Second reader must be selected before the oral
    presentation can be scheduled

The Moderator
  • Assists the presenter in setting up the
    presentation
  • Convenes the presentation
  • Introduces the presenter
  • Summarizes the work completed by the presenter in
    preparation of the portfolio
  • Conducts the answer and question session
  • Concludes the presentation

Selection
  • Students responsibility for securing a moderate
    by asking a classmate to serve in that capacity
  • Each student serves as the moderator for one
    other student
  • Must be student who not involved in any of the
    presenters projects
  • Must be selected before the presentation can be
    scheduled.

Detailed Role of Moderator
  • Assist the speaker in set up
  • Ensure that the speaker has everything need to
    provide the presentation
  • Pass out any handouts

Moderator Role
  • Convene the presentation
  • Start the presentation on time
  • Welcome the audience, acknowledge guests and
    introduce advisor and second reader
  • Provide a formal introduction of the speaker
  • Name
  • Educational preparation
  • Honor or recognitions received at UAB
  • Area of interest in OT
  • Career plans following graduation
  • Provide a brief overview of the work completed by
    the presenter in preparation of the portfolio

  • Monitor the length of the presentation
  • Speaker must complete within 30 minutes
  • Monitor time and discretely alert speaker
  • Conduct the question and answer session
  • Thank speaker for presentation and ask audience
    for questions
  • If no questions are forthcoming stimulate
    conversation by asking a question
  • Must have 2 prepared questions
  • Conclude the Q A at 10 minutes for the hour
  • Thank the audience for attending and dismiss

    to growth

Presentation Length
  • Moderator introduces speaker (10 minutes)
  • Presentation (25-30 minutes)
  • Moderator opens floor for questions (10 min)
  • Moderator concludes presentation and dismisses
    audience
  • Advisor and second reader remain and discuss
    evaluation of oral presentation with student and
    with moderator (10 minutes)

Scheduling the Portfolio
  • Must be given go-ahead by advisor
  • Scheduled with Julia on first come, first served
    basis ( you snooze you lose)
  • Must be scheduled between Febr 1st and March
    31st.
  • Check with advisor and second reader to make sure
    they are available on the date you want
  • Complete the oral portfolio presentation schedule
    request form and send to Julia

Announcing the Presentation
  • Post flyers in RMSB, LRC, Webb
  • Title, speaker, date, time, location
  • May be posted ONLY on bulletin boards
  • Do NOT tape to doors, windows, cabinets
  • 10 days prior to presentation date
  • Send an email notice to all faculty along with
    final version of written portfolio
  • No rough drafts, incomplete portfolios or promise
    of portfolios
  • Remove all posters with 24hrs of completing the
    presentation

  • Write up a personal experience using the
    guidelines for the written portfolio

Assignment 4
  • Translate into oral presentation
  • Use PowerPoint to create the presentation
  • Must be exactly 5 minutes long
  • Select a moderator
  • Convenes and concludes presentation
  • Very short introduction (2 minutes)
  • Ask for questions-have question ready to ask (2
    minutes)
  • Class will grade presentation

Assignment 4
  • Develop and present a power point presentation of
    assignment 2.
  • The presentation will be critiqued by other
    students, the course instructor and department
    chair using the Final Assessment Form for the
    Oral Presentation of Portfolio.
  • All presentations are due Sept 22nd
  • Email your presentation to me by midnight that
    day
