Title: What is GIS Geographic Information Systems
1What is GIS?Geographic Information Systems
GIS is a System of computer software,
hardware and data, and personnel to help
manipulate, analyze and present information that
is tied to a spatial location spatial
location area of interest information
visualization and analyses of data system
linking software, hardware, data personnel
you are the key to the power of GIS!
2What is GPS?Global Positioning System
GPS is used to determine the location of
features. GPS data is then input into GIS.

- Contra Costa County has implemented a 5-year
countywide drainage inventory project and
infrastructure mapping project. - This project is expected to be the pilot for
Solano and Napa Counties. - Students are needed for field mapping and
analysis. You will be trained in GPS collection
GIS experience is preferred, but not necessary. - To learn more about GIS, take this class GEOL

GIS at Solano College!
Geology 10 - Introduction to GIS The
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a
computer-based data processing tool used to view,
manage and analyze spatial information. This
class will introduce you to the power of GIS
through in-class demonstrations with real-life
problems as well as hands-on experience in the
computer lab with ArcView GIS. This class will
cover map projections and coordinate systems,
formats of GIS data, importing digital maps,
spatial and statistical analyses, many case
studies, and student projects. Call Mark Feighner
at 707-864-7000, ext 665 for more information. (3
units transferable credit limited to 20
persons).
If your major includes fire technology, criminal
justice, biology, real estate, or business you
will want to learn more about GIS and how this
new technology is changing your field!
