READING MATERIAL
45
Techniques and Equipment
(Background)
  • Contingent on River Size
  • Large River (Queets, Quinault, Hoh)
  • Characteristics
  • Broad valleys with shallow gradients
  • Large flow volumes variations
  • Yearly channel changes
  • Small River (Salmon, Wynoochee)
  • Characteristics
  • Smaller watersheds with steeper gradients
  • Smaller flow volumes with smaller pools and runs
  • Confined channels with little/no yearly change

46
Typical Large River (Upper
Quinault)
47
Typical Smaller River
(SALMON RIVER)
48
FLY FISHING TECHNIQUES (Large
Rivers)

FLY FISHING TECHNIQUES (Small
Rivers)
  • Small River Fishing Techniques
  • Nymphing

54
NYMPHING
  • A Fly Fishing Technique that Utilizes Heavy,
    Weight-Forward Floating Lines with Short,
    Fast-Tapered Leaders, Strike Indicators and
    Weighted Flies or Split Shot

FLY FISHING OUTFITS
  • Large River Fly Outfits

    and/or 12 to 14 foot 8-, 9- or 10-wt. spey rods
  • Matching lines with sink tips of various
    densities
  • Short leaders (3 - 4 feet) for sink tips with 12
    - 15 lb. tippets
  • Small River Fly Outfits
  • 8 to 10 foot, 9 or 10 wt. single-handed rods
  • Bass or salt-water tapered floating lines
  • Fast-tapered leaders with strike indicators and
weighted flies or split shot attached

59
STRATEGIES
  • ADAPT
  • Watersheds Have Different Characteristics
  • Moving from one watershed to another close by
    often improves success

60
STRATEGIES
  • ADAPT - Watersheds Have Different Characteristics
  • SPECIALIZE - Large vs. Small Rivers

61
Advantages and Disadvantages Large vs.
Small Rivers
  • Large Rivers
  • Spey fish
  • Less wear/tear on equipment
  • Scenery and views
  • More fishing time
  • Open vistas/wildlife
  • BUT
  • More people/boats
  • More exertion
  • Fish scattered
  • Small Rivers
  • More intimate
  • Fewer people
  • No boats
  • Fish less spooked
  • Fish concentrated
  • BUT
  • Harder access
  • Hike a lot
  • Wear and tear

62
STRATEGIES (Fishing
Locations)
  • ADAPT - Watersheds Have Different Characteristics
  • SPECIALIZE - Large vs. Small Rivers
  • Fish Prime Locations
  • Pool Tail-outs
  • Boulders/Banks/Blow-downs
  • Seams/Ledges

68
WHY?
  • Close 1- 1.5 hrs. from Olympia
  • Large Smolt Plants (170,000 Winter Fish 60,000
    Summer Fish)
  • Dam-controlled River (Flows Regulated - Less
    Susceptible to Rain Events)
  • Reasonable size - Easy to Wade (below 800 cfs)
  • Accessible above and below the 7400 Line Bridge
  • Selective Fishery/No Boats above the 7400 Line
    Bridge
  • Both Long Rod and Nymphing Techniques
