    information environment?

The Issues
  • Shrinking public support for higher education
  • Changing role of the library in a technological
environment and speed of technological change
  • Information as a commodity and higher cost of
    information
  • Retirements in the profession and competition for
    librarians and staff
  • Cultural shifts among users in an increasingly
    pluralistic society
  • Increasing emphasis on lifelong learning
  • Space needs and quality of library as place

Trends
  • Regardless of perceived value, the funding will
    not sustain current publishing model
  • Libraries will buy a smaller and smaller of
    total publishing output
  • As libraries purchase less and less of output,
lack of access will begin to erode scholarship
and faculty will be more willing to consider
    alternatives
  • New tools and models are emerging to support
    digital scholarly communications
  • Networking and new software critical to providing
    alternatives
  • Some disruption in access to be expected during
    transition

19
Future Directions
  • Open access movement
  • NIH pending legislation
  • Letter from Nobel laureates to Congress
  • Repository models (DSpace,Fedora)
  • Monograph software (Greenstone,DLXS)
  • Serials DPubS (Cornell/PSUL Mellon Project)
  • Image software (ContentDM)
  • E-archiving technologies standards evolving
  • New library/publisher partnerships

20
