2008 First Year Diversity Student Recruitment
Initiatives
  • Visit 270 high schools in Pennsylvania (174),
    Ohio (92), and New York (4) High schools. 48
    visits are to high schools with high minority
    populations.
  • Represent the State System of Higher Education at
    Parent Night events (Butler and Seneca Valley
    HSs)
  • Participate in 105 College Fair Programs in
    Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, New York,
    Washington D.C. and Maryland). 25 college fairs
    are minority-focused, and 38 college fairs are
    out-of-state.
  • 17 College Fair Programs will be covered by The
    Alumni Admission Assistants. The Alumni
    Admission Assistants use Blackboard as an
    electronic informational and communications tool.
  • Coordinate formal large group Saturday Showcases
    on three dates during the fall semester and two
    dates in spring semester. The fall showcase will
    bring more than 600 prospective students to
    campus. The spring showcases will bring more than
    more than 400 prospective students to campus.
  • Hosted three Summer Showcase programs for 315
    prospective students attending during the month
    of June. Worked collaboratively with the
    Orientation Office, to provide walking tours. 
    Academic Deans and Department Chairs participated
    in each programs representing the majors within
    their college.
  • Hosted four Summer Career Days, Careers in
    Sports, Careers in Education, Computing Careers,
    Careers in Health which brought 151 students to
    campus.

  • Host PASSHE Counselor Information Day in October
    and attend CID in March in Eastern PA
  • Launch new Undergraduate Admission landing page
    and secondary pages to enhance navigation and
    visual appeal
  • Host Opportunity Knocks overnight visit program
    in February for 80 minority HS seniors
  • who have been offered admission for fall 2009
  • Offer small family-oriented group visitations
    twice daily. Each small group presentation
  • visit is comprised of six to ten students and
    their families and includes an SRU overview
    presentation, campus tour, and optional meetings
    with faculty or coaches.
  • September-May, offer small group visitations
    nearly every Saturday. The format is similar
  • to the small family-oriented sessions conducted
    during the week.
  • Created campus tour of SRU for YOUniversity TV

  • Launch new Customer Relations Management Software
    for inquiry and travel management

Initiatives
  • Update the informational print and Web resources
    available to all 14 Pennsylvania and 4
    out-of-state community colleges.

  • Update Transfer Resource Guide and distribute to
    18 community colleges
  • Participate in 37 community college
    transfer/interview days
  • Reach out to build relationships to four
    community colleges in OH and NY.
  • Award 20, 1000 Scholarships to the top
    academically prepared transfer students from the
    Pennsylvania Community College System.
  • Communicate to prospective students, applicants,
    offered and admitted students, and community
    college counselors via e-newsletters.
  • Participate in the Western Pennsylvania Transfer
    Advisory Council and the state-wide Transfer and
    Articulation Council.

    recruitment messages and academic training for
    their department

    Directors of the University
  • Work closely with the academic departments to
    best manage the enrollment of new students
  • Assist Athletic Department in the recruitment of
    new student athletes through individual appts.

    relationships, and regular meetings of the

  • Worked with Physical Therapy Program on a new
    video that highlights the PT program in a way
    that is beneficial to new freshmen and transfer
    students
  • Partner with over 100 faculty and 30 student life
    staff in fall and spring showcase events, Summer
    Preview Days, and Summer Career Days

Initiatives-Fall 2008/Spring 2008 update
  • ON-CAMPUS RECRUITMENT Enhanced on-campus
    recruitment efforts through more strategic
    participation in college events and activities
    like career expos, graduating teachers programs,
    graduation celebration days.
  • OPEN HOUSE PROGRAMS Restructured and hosted
    fall and spring open houses for prospective
    graduate students, increasing attendance 650 and
    a 36 enrollment net of those who attended.
  • OFF-CAMPUS RECRUITMENT Restructured
    representation at off-campus graduate fairs and
    college visits to better reflect the graduate
    population.
  • COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY Encouraged students of
    color to consider graduate studies at SRU by
    attending conferences and college programs
    designed to encourage students of color to
    continue their education. Funded current graduate
    students opportunities to attend with
    undergraduate students as well.
  • STUDENT SATISFACTION AND RETENTION Designed and
    implemented new programs and activities to better
    serve SRUs current graduate students to include
    a graduate student satisfaction survey, focus
    groups for students and graduate assistants,
    graduate students first participation in SRUs
    academic honors convocation, Outstanding Graduate
    Student Reception, new student information days,
    and the continuation of the annual graduate
    honors reception.
  • OFF-SITE LOCATION Increased commitment to SRUs
    off-site location by offering weekly office hours
    at the RLA, attending all educational partner
    meetings serving as a member of the action team
    to create and implement collaborative, shared
    registration among partners, a career symposium
    and other Marketing/recruitment efforts.
  • MEMBERSHIP/AFFILIATIONS Continued to develop
    and enhance SRUs graduate presence on local and
    national levels through attendance and
    involvement in Graduate Council (campus), Teacher
    Advisory Council (local), Pennsylvania
    Association of Graduate Schools (state executive
    board member), and Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
    scholarship (representative), NAGAP and AACRAO
    member (national).

Initiatives-Fall 2008/Spring 2008
  • PROCESS Restructured the graduate admissions
    application process to improve communication to
    students and their respective departments and
    reduce in-process time for each application,
    thereby increasing yield.
  • AWARENESS Created databases of school districts
    and businesses for a series of mailing campaigns
    to increase awareness of SRUs graduate programs
    on campus and at the Regional Learning Alliance
    (RLA) off-site location.
  • INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Created a special
    international student brochure to variably print
    each students name and customize pictures
    pertinent to each major in an effort to attract
    more international students to apply. Follow up
    data collection showed no inquiries or applicants
    resulting from this effort, therefore, the
    initiative will be discontinued after the
    contracts expiration in September of 2007.
  • RESEARCH Initiated pertinent research from
    which marketing and recruitment strategies were
    implemented for 2006 and 2007.
  • MARKETING/PUBLICATIONS Developed a graduate
    admissions look for 2006-2007 to compliment the
    SRU brand and distinguish graduate studies
    publications from other SRU materials to include
    pocket folder with view book pages, personalized
    international student brochure, inquiry follow-up
    postcards, posters with tear-off cards, open
    house and information day invitations.
  • FACULTY INVOLVEMENT Designed, mailed
  • and electronically posted The Graduate News,
  • a newsletter written by graduate faculty about
    their programs.
  • ASSISTANCE TO DEPARTMENTS Assisted individual
    departments by creating and implementing
    enrollment strategies targeted to specific
    audiences to include publication creation and
    mailings, membership in on-line educational
    sites, participation in special events and
    programs.
  • GRADUATE WEB SITE Redesigned the graduate
    admissions web site to include interactive
    functions, student-to-student roll-overs,
    interactive travel map, on-line rsvp
    opportunities for open houses and new student
    information days, and ad hoc postings to generate
    interest in graduate studies at SRU.
