• Background
• a. TQE Grant - part of the P16 Council initiative
  with Harrisburg School District allowed us to
  purchase technology

P16 Harrisburg SD Goals

• Provide innovative professional development in
  literacy, math and technology integration which
  ties to state academic standards and supports
  standards-based curriculum reform in the HSD for
  current teachers, higher education faculty and
  pre-service teachers

Benefits of Working with P16

• We now have three target schools for pre-service
  systematic placements
• Increased interest in Urban education for Messiah
  College students

Benefits of Working with P16 cond

• There is a working relationship with Harrisburg
  SD for other connections, e.g.
• (math fair, professional development, Early
  Education programs, etc. )

• The TQE grant enabled us to purchase a Smartboard
  to use with pre-service teachers
• The use of the Smartboard as part of the field
  experience lesson plans was made an assignment
  for every student in my two math methods classes

• In order for this to succeed, expert technology
  help was needed ( I had never used a Smartboard
  previous to this grant/program) This is the
  challenge for classroom teachers as well
• Josh Mitchell has come to train teachers,
  students and me several times a semester

• Lessons Learned
• Many schools in all school districts have at
  least one Smartboard but it is in the closet, or
  only one teacher has it in a room for one class
  use
• Teachers do not have the expertise to use it
• Time is a large factor for teacher technology
  training

• The fuel / energy source initially was the grant
  , now it is the benefits of the use of the
  technology. It is a powerful tool for
  instruction. Smartboard use is Brain- Compatible
  Instruction.

• Brain-based instruction (Eric Jennings) includes
• Active, meaningful learning
• Stimulating, varied input
• Accurate timely feedback
• Safe, non- threatening environment

• An example of the SmartBoard's features will be
  shown by one of my students, Faith Watts who is
  presently doing a field-experience in Harrisburg
  SD.
• She will illustrate a math lesson
