Title: Loy Shiow Yong
1Introduction to SciFinder Scholar
- Loy Shiow Yong
- (B.Sc Dip. Lib. Inf. Sc.)
- Senior Manager (Science Library)
- 15 May 2007
2Our Learning Objective
- Conduct literature search using SFS for the
project CM3291 - Understand the contents and organization of SFS
- Locate references for synthesis of a substance.
- Locate physical, chemical properties of a
substance.
3The analyzed and indexed information from the
literature goes into major databases
CAS Databases
Medline
CAplusĀ
CAS RegistrySM
novel substances
bibliographic resources
abstracts
CAS Registry Numbers
CASREACT
chemical property information
journals and patents
reactions

17Tips For Topic Search
- Natural language search interface.
- Allow construct search statement in complete
sentence. SFS understands which are keywords and
recognizes prepositions and conjunctions. - Retrieve words in variant forms, plural and past
tense, abbreviations, synonyms. - Use bracket for Synonym.
- Use Boolean operator (and, or, not) carefully,
SFS sometimes cannot understand when there is gt1
operators. Use conjunctions and proposition in
your search statement.
18Project Topic
- Synthesis and spectroscopic properties of
ferrocene
19Log in SFS
20Compare the result sets of the two search
statements
Additional set of result
21Search statements retrieves same set of results
- Spectroscopic property of ferrocene
- Spectroscopic properties of ferrocene

Take note of the registry no.
23Copy registry no. and save it in clipboard. Open
structure template by selecting Explore Chemcial
structure. Then paste it onto the template to
export the structure (see below). You can now
perform searches on reactions and substances.
24Reaction and Structure Search
- Chemical Abstracts Service has Pre-recorded
SciFinder demonstrations on reaction searching
and structure drawing. To view the demo, click on
the link below. - http//casevents.webex.com
- Then at the left hand side, select SciFinder
e-Seminars - Recorded e-Seminars. -
- Note
- These demo are SciFinder and NOT SciFinder
Scholar. SciFinder is a product for the
non-academic insititutions. The main search
feature that is unique to SciFinder is the
Biology Topics but the structure and reaction
search are the same.
