- Participants will be guided through a brief
presentation on IDP requirements and Frequently
Asked Questions by interns and professionals. - Participants will preview Mentoring Essentials",
the first workshop in the newly developed
training program for mentors and firm
supervisors. - Participants will learn the various ways in which
supporting interns can be reciprocally beneficial
to both themselves and their firms.

pre-professional program (program which leads to
direct entry into a 2 year M.Arch) - After completion of the 1st year in a
NAAB-accredited M.Arch program (with an
undergraduate degree in another discipline)

Getting Started The Application
- IDP is required for initial registration in 51 of
54 jurisdictions (AZ, Guam, VI) - Some states have their own programs (CO, WI)
however, interns should be aware that these will
not allow them to become registered in other
states. - Remember the entry points Encourage interns to
initiate their council records as soon as they

IDP Supervisor
- MUST be registered in the jurisdiction where the
office in which the intern is working is located
(some exceptions in metropolitan areas such as DC
and New York City) - Should be familiar with state registration
requirements and with IDP Guidelines - Supervises and assesses interns work on a daily
basis

- Provides reasonable opportunities for intern to
gain experience in IDP training categories and
expertise areas - Meet regularly with the intern to review progress
and to certify (sign) intern's documentation of
training activities - Encourage intern participation in seminars and
other supplementary education activities or
resources - Confer, if necessary, with the intern's mentor

- A registered architect, preferably outside of
firm - Supervisor may be mentor, but not best scenario
for intern - Should be familiar with state registration
requirements and IDP Guidelines - Meet regularly (at least quarterly) with intern

maintenance following graduation, one transmittal

Getting Ready to Take the Test
- Some states allow early taking of the ARE (CA,
AZ, WI, KY, TX, VT, FL, PR, AL, MA, OH, NE, and
more to come) - Request in writing to NCARB that your record file
be transmitted to the state in which you wish to
be registered - Computer-based exam offered year-round at testing
centers across country - Virginia has a 3-year clock.

- July 2008, NCARB will launch ARE 4.0
- The latest version of the exam updates and
improves the current format by combining graphic
and multiple-choice content - 7 divisions instead of 9
- Candidates already testing in 3.1 will have one
year, until May 2009 before they must upgrade to
4.0 - Any divisions taken and passed will be upgraded
to 4.0.
