URBAN SITES

• Both sites are in Potchefstroom
• Established Ikageng people live in brick houses
  some for more than 50 years

WORKING SCHEDULE

• January April 2005
• Permission from the Kgosi to work in area
• Permission from the DOH to do the study in rural
  and urban areas
• Permission from the Ethics Committee from the
  North West University to do the study
• February 2005 Start-up workshop in Potchefstroom
  with PURE Canada and SANPAD
• Appoint 16 fieldworkers (8 rural and 8 urban) and
  train them for one week to fill out all
  questionnaires except physical activity and food
  frequency.

WORKING AT GANEYSA

The truck loaded with three ship containers with
12 examination beds on top and 70 chairs and two
tents in-between arrived Sunday night 29 Sept
2005 in Ganeysa. The containers were handled by
crane and placed next to each other covered with
a large tent next to the fence of the guest
house. Two other tents were also erected next to
it.

The processThe subjects arrived on site with
hired taxis. They were received in the first
tent where the study was explained and
pre-counselling for HIV testing was done per
group. At station nr.1 their already filled out
adult questionnaires were given to them and they
were enrolled, a subject number was allocated and
their adult questionnaires were verified. Then
the subjects had to sign informed consent with a
Tswana speaking researcher.

The physical activity questionnaires and other
psychological well being (coping) questionnaires
were filled out while people awaiting their
results. Every subjects then also received a
sandwich packet with a fruit. Each subjects
received post counselling for HIV together with
their results (Bp, HIV status Blood Glucose).
All abnormalities were referred to the local
clinic/hospital with a referral letter.
