Student Achievement
  • Students can rise to the challenge if we prepare

  • Success with the program directly relates to
teachers assigning the project in class and
    assisting students with their work.
  • Working with project over a period of time is
more effective in producing a quality project.
  • Students working with their family, community
resources, and/or industry, usually results in
increasing quality and complexities of project.

8
Student Achievement (cont.)
  • CFK is part of our KPBSD High School Science
    Curriculum.
  • 3 Student projects have received a Presidential
    Award for their work!
  • One student has presented her winning CFK idea
    on Good Morning America.

Final Presentations
  • Each year 12 ideas are selected for final
    presentations.
  • Each student/group presents and competes for
    final standing.

Teaching CFK Content Processes
  • Global Environmental Concerns
  • Idea Generation.. What is a good idea?
  • Project Proposal Development
  • Research www, local community sources, borough,
    state, federal, industry,etc.
  • Interview processes, phone, email, in person.

15
Global Environmental Concerns
  • Work with students on an understanding of Global
    Concerns.
  • Research each global concern in groups
  • Groups present to class
  • Relate each global concern to local area
    environmental concerns.
  • Relate global concerns to possible health
    concerns.
  • Connection of Global Concerns to one another.

16
Global Environmental Concerns
  • Water Pollution
  • Air Pollution
  • Toxic Wastes
  • Radioactive Wastes
  • Global Warming
  • Ozone Depletion
  • Fisheries Depletion
  • Habitat Destruction
  • Forest Depletion
  • Desertification
  • Species Extinction (All Kingdoms)
  • Students initial research on topic should
support the fact their project idea does
    represent a real problem.
  • Their project work should focus on a plan to
    solve that problem.
  • The ultimate goal is implementation of their
    project plan.

17
Idea Generation Process!
  • The most difficult from the teacher perspective
is the creation of ideas by the students.
  • Students can revisit ideas from past projects.
They do additional research and work to take idea
    to new level.
  • Local Community Environmental Issues can lead to
    great ideas.

18
Generation of Ideas can be facilitated by
  • Weekly news reporting in classroom of science
related topics in local news papers relating to
environment or biology by individual students.
  • Teacher taking note of environmental issues
    reported locally.
  • Use of supplied CFK Idea List
  • http//www.ptialaska.net/sikorski/ideas.html

19
A Good Idea?
  • Local issue suggests there is an environmental
    problem.
  • Student research finds basis of environmental
concern, possible connections to global concerns,
and data there really is a problem!
  • Student research and brainstorming finds possible
    solutions to problem.
  • Solutions are feasible, innovative, and
    beneficial to environment.

20
What would a good final student project include?
  • Complete Essay Proposal
  • Visual representation of Idea/Project
  • Complete Entry Form with Title of Proposal.

21
Essay includes
  • A well written and researched essay with
    documented sources.
  • Discussion of environmental concern including why
    its really a problem locally.
  • Solution of problem discussed in depth with
    issues showing research and/or experimentation,
    feasibility, and vision.
  • 500 words more or less!

22
Visual Includes
  • Information to show others visually what project
    is about.
  • Examples of visual might include, actual
invention, model, power-point, web page, short
    movie, game, etc.
  • Visuals should relate new information to project,
not just the same info as essay.

23
Possible Student Assignments
  • Project Idea.. 1-2 pages explaining environmental
problem, why its a problem, global concerns
    associated with, and possible solutions.
  • Project Draft Essay, 500 words more or less,
explaining environmental problem, why its a
problem, global concerns associated with, and
proposed solutions to problem. Include sources,
10 www, 3 (book, mag, news), 3 interviews of
    experts on topics.
  • Final Essay, address teacher concerns and/or
comments, completion of all research. Put
    finishing touch on project proposal.
  • Project Visuals- Visual representations of
    project!

24
Students Present to Class
  • Classroom presentation to peers of project and
visuals when all projects are due. (PowerPoint
    works great here!)
  • Peer questions and input of positive suggestions.
  • Possible re-evaluation of all work before final
    submissions.

25
And..
  • You have two due dates to consider as a teacher.
  • One, your assignment due date.
  • Two, the contest deadline
  • Some students will work on their own and might
turn in replacements to first turn in due to
    additional work, research, and planning.

26
Always make sure.
  • The teacher has time to look and process contest
    materials to turn in.
  • Students use their Assigned number on all work..
    Essay.. Visuals..etc.
  • There should be no reference to student names,
    teachers, schools, in work.

27
In closing.
  • CFK is a example of a partnership with Industry,
Business, Community, and our Schools that really
    makes a difference for kids.
  • CFK has allowed over 150 students in high levels
of academic competition for the last 13 years.
  • CFK has allowed educators to be involved and
determine the future of the contest by making
    yearly adjustments to the contest.
  • CFK has allowed our students to do environmental
projects that impacts and involves our
    communities.
  • CKF has promoted a community celebration of our
    students achievements.
