PID
  • PID is a long lasting infection affecting the
uterus, the tubes which deliver eggs to fallopian
tubes and the nearby structures in the lower
    abdomen.

3
Symptoms
  • Pain in the lower part of the abdomen, most often
    affecting both sides
  • Occasional pain in upper abdomen and lower back.
  • Monthly menstrual cycles may be altered
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Painful urination
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pain in rectum
  • Fever
  • Small percentage of sufferers will develop
    scarred fallopian tubes
  • Causing difficulties in conceiving.

4
Causes
  • PID is most likely to occur between the ages of
15 and 25, in sexually active women.
  • In many cases, the microbe is transmitted
    sexually.
  • Sometimes it comes as a result of spread of a
    germ from a nearby structure(appendicitis).
  • The most common germ to cause PID is Chlamydia
    (in at least 50)
  • Gonorrhea is also a fairly common cause.
  • Both may occur together.
  • Other germs may be involved, but at least 20 of
    patients, no cause found

5
Diagnosis
  • Seek medical advice
  • Receive a pelvic exam
  • A specimen of the mucus inside the vagina and
also inside the neck of the cervix
  • Ultrasound Scan may be required/ Examine the
ovaries and other organs in the pelvis in detail

6
Treatment
  • The doctor is likely to prescribe antibiotics for
    at least 2 weeks
  • This will usually take the form of 2 different
    antibiotics at the same time
  • Take pain killers
  • Follow-up checkup

7
Prevention
  • Avoiding multiple sex partners
  • Anyway, barrier methods of contraception help
    reduce the risk
  • It is necessary to prevent further unnecessary
    spread
