Title: CHEM 370, Chemical Literature

1
CHEM 370, Chemical Literature
  • Locating Books and Journals in the Library

2
Arrangement of Materials
  • All books and journals are arranged using a
    subject-oriented call number theme
  • In the Library of Congress classification scheme
  • The first group of letters signifies the broad
    subject area
  • The first group of numbers signifies the more
    specific subject area
  • The subsequent letters and numbers identify the
individual book, based on the authors name or
    title

3
Arrangement of Materials
  • Traditional subject areas are well grouped
  • QD chemistry
  • QD 241-449 organic chemistry
  • QD 380-388 organic polymer chemistry
  • QD 410-413 organometallic chemistry
  • QD 415-449 biological chemistry

4
Arrangement of Materials
  • Other new or interdisciplinary areas may be more
    scattered
  • Example chemical toxicity information
  • GE environmental science
  • QP biochemistry and physiology
  • RA includes medical toxicology
  • S includes pesticide toxicology
  • T includes general toxic chemical data
  • TD environmental engineering

5
Finding Call Numbers
  • Libraries use catalogs to enable location of
items by author, title, or subject
  • in print form, the card catalog
  • most libraries now have electronic card catalogs

6
Electronic Catalogs and Bibliographic Databases
  • Command Line vs. Menu Driven
  • some electronic catalogs require a typed command
  • f kw diels-alder
  • most catalogs now have a web interface where all
that is typed are the search terms
  • basic, advanced, and expert searches
  • command line systems are generally more powerful
    and flexible
  • higher learning curve

7
Electronic Catalogs and Bibliographic Databases
  • Available Indexes
  • All catalogs use the same basic record format
  • specific library decides which part of the record
    is indexed
  • most libraries have some type of author, title
    and subject index
  • other common indexes include keywords and call
    numbers
  • not all indexes search the same way
  • word format
  • subject search uses LCSH
  • use keyword or title searches first

8
Electronic Catalogs and Bibliographic Databases
  • Available Indexes
  • browse vs. search
  • use language or publication dates to limit
    searches
  • combine searches

9
Other Search Features
  • Truncation
  • replace part of a word with a symbol ( ? ! )
to search for multiple words with the same root
  • organo?
  • organochlorine, organohalogen, organometallic,
    etc
  • some systems allow internal truncation
  • wom!n
  • women, woman, etc

10
Other Search Features
  • Boolean searching
  • OR
  • term A or term b
  • AND
  • both term A and term b
  • NOT
  • term A but not term b

11
Other Search Features
  • Proximity
  • using multiple terms can be looked at several
    ways
  • separate items or phrases
  • proximity operators
  • term A NEAR5 term B

12
Other Search Features
  • Stopwords
  • words that are very common and lack subject
    meaning are not indexed
  • a, an, the, etc

13
Display Features
  • Know how the system displays results
  • short display vs. full record
  • holdings
  • Sorting
  • by author
  • by title
  • chronological order

14
Display Features
  • Marking records
  • used to refine search
  • used to combine records for printing, etc
  • Printing/downloading/emailing
  • some catalogs just use browser functions
  • others have special functions

15
South Dakota Library Network (SDLN)
  • The integrated library system for all of South
    Dakotas libraries
  • contains the electronic catalog for all of the
    states holdings
  • circulation information
  • items on reserve
  • newspapers
  • journals
