• All books and journals are arranged using a
  subject-oriented call number theme
• In the Library of Congress classification scheme
• The first group of letters signifies the broad
  subject area
• The first group of numbers signifies the more
  specific subject area
• The subsequent letters and numbers identify the
  individual book, based on the authors name or
  title

• other common indexes include keywords and call
  numbers
• not all indexes search the same way
