Title: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

1
Reduce, Re-use, Recycle
  • Be green keep the Island smiling

2
X-Isles green statement
  • X-Isle Sports is firmly committed to protecting
the existing environment and minimising the
impact of its business on the surrounding area.
  • Due to the nature of its business, X-Isle Sports
has a minimal environmental impact but will
always endeavour to improve on this as well as
encouraging its staff, students and suppliers to
    do likewise.

3
How X-Isle views the problem
  • Problem 1 Rubbish
  • Problem 2 Rubbish bin
  • Problem 3 Rubbish tip
  • Problem 4 Rubbish landfill
  • Problem 5 Rubbish world

4
Key aims
  • To considerably reduce the amount of waste we
    produce and send to landfill
  • To re-use and recycle as many different waste
    products as possible
  • To educate everyone who works at and visits
X-Isle, making them more responsible for their
    own waste

5
Our policies
  • Our key green policies are as follows
  • Promote Sustainable Tourism on the Island by
    educating our staff and clients
  • Prevention not cure attitude
  • Reduce, re-use, re-cycle in that order
  • Be greenovative - new for 2006
  • Use safety craft that best suits our working
    environment
  • Heightened energy economy
  • Promote a green working environment, that is
pleasant for both staff and clients

6
Charitable support
  • In 2006 we will be continuing our support for
  • Surfers Against Sewage
  • Solent Protection Society
  • X-Isle believes that these charities have a
commitment to improving and maintaining the
environment of marine and coastal areas
  • This is key to the ongoing success of the
watersports and tourism industry, both on the
Isle of Wight and throughout the rest of the UK

7
New incentives for 2006
  • Jet Powered Safety Boat
  • 2006 sees X-Isle expanding its product range.
  • To cope with the excess volumes on the water we
have deemed it necessary to purchase a new safety
    vessel.
  • The vessel chosen in keeping with our
    environmental policy is jet powered.

8
Environmental advantages of Jet Power
  • Fuel Economy
  • Jet Powered boats are more fuel efficient than
    outboard motors.
  • Environmental Impact
  • Jet Powered boats are even less destructive on
marine environments than outboard motors and
place other water users in less risk of injury
    than ever before.

Appendix
  • What we already do

10
What we already do
  • Office
  • All printer cartridges are to be recycled after
    use
  • All scrap paper is to be re-used rather than
    thrown away
  • Where possible all printer paper will be recycled
  • Office staff should at all times endeavour to use
the minimum amount of stationary possible in
order to complete a particular task
  • All booking forms, risk assessments, and other
printed material will, where possible, be printed
    in double-sided format
  • All correspondence with clients will be via
    e-mail unless this is impractical
  • When not in use, electronic equipment such as PDQ
machines, TVs DVD players should be turned off
  • Bus and train timetables should be made available
to students to encourage the use of public
    transport
  • X-Isle Sports will endeavour to maintain a file
relating to all environmental issues which it
encounters in the course of conducting its
    business

11
What we already do (contd)
  • Training
  • During induction briefings Instructors should
make students aware of our environmental policy
and ask that they respect it. Special attention
should be given to the leaving of rubbish around
the training centre and on the beach
  • Instructors should ensure that a litter bin is to
    hand whilst conducting beach training
  • Special care should be taken whilst re-fuelling
    safety boats at sea
  • Before returning to the training centre
Instructors should check the beach for any litter
which may have been left by the group and others

12
What we already do (contd)
  • Plants that detox
  • Plants can absorb toxins and increase the
humidity of a room, dampening down dust
  • Hairy rubbery leaf surfaces attract dust in the
air and absorb the toxins it contains
  • A study has found headaches to be reduced by 47
    and dry coughs by 37
  • House plants clean the air of chemicals plants
use chemicals as a source of energy
  • House plants raise humidity in buildings air
that is more humid is perceived as being warmer
than dry air, which could save on the need to use
    so much heating

13
What we already do (contd)
  • X-Isles 2005 drive was to invest in a couple of
plants that are be effective in its centre
  • Boston Fern effective at removing formaldehyde,
found in cookers, lino flooring, ceiling tiles
and MDF. Both are excellent at removing
    household toxins
  • Peace Lily good at removing a variety of
toxins. Has a high transpiration rate,
increasing room humidity which is good for
    allergy sufferers

14
What we already do (contd)
  • Operations vehicles
  • X-Isle Sports will always endeavour to use low
fuel consumption outboard engines on its safety
    boats
  • Only bio-degradable detergents will be used in
    the washing of training equipment
  • Where possible, only environmentally friendly
substances will be used in the repair of training
    equipment
  • Staff and students alike are to be encouraged to
restrict non-essential usage of vehicles whilst
in the local area. In particular, students should
be encouraged to walk from the training facility
to Silver Beach rather than drive. Members of
staff are requested not to drive vehicles around
Bembridge on journeys that they could otherwise
    have walked, cycled, skated etc.
  • During the busy summer months, members of staff
are requested not to park in the centre of
Bembridge at any time during office hours
  • To limit noise pollution the use of skateboards
should restricted from residential areas of the
    village and late at night

15
What we already do (contd)
  • Marketing suppliers
  • In future all marketing material will be printed
    on recycled paper
  • Where possible X-Isle Sports will attempt to
    promote web-based advertising rather than
    paper-based
  • X-Isle Sports will always endeavour to use local
suppliers and encourage them to do the same
  • We will encourage our local accommodation
providers and suppliers to help and actively
    promote the Green Island Project
  • Where offered the option between two suppliers we
will favour the one that supports environmental
    initiatives

16
What we already do (contd)
  • Training centre
  • Use of natural light will be made as much as
    possible over other light sources.
  • All training centres will provide receptacles for
    recycling of rubbish.
  • Constant monitoring of energy usage will be
    undertaken.
  • Where possible we will use low energy light
    bulbs.
  • Other power sources such as solar power will be
investigated as an alternative to mains provided
    electricity.
  • All training centres will provide information on
the Green Island Project and sustainable tourism.
  • Where appropriate we are and will become members
of ethical, wildlife and conservation bodies.

17
What we already do (contd)
  • Shop
  • Re-use hangers
  • Use natural light wherever possible
  • Encourage a green tidy environment
