2What is EndNote?
- EndNote is software that helps researchers
gather, manage, and cite references to journal
articles, books, maps, reports, artwork, etc. - Free Graduate students, faculty and staff at KU
can download EndNote.
3Downloading EndNote
- Links below to the KU EndNote download site Read
entire screen before download - Windows XP/2000 or Mac OSX
- To uninstall a previous version of EndNote
- Close all applications.
- Go to the Start menu gt Control Panel gt Add or
Remove Programs. - Select the previous version of EndNote and click
"Remove." - Download EndNote X for Windows XP/2000 Now (You
need to login with your KU Online ID to download
this software.)

- Update the KU Libraries connections file.

- EndNote library will store references you
collect during the literature search - EndNote is searchable. Keyword search for
references saved into your library - Just think of it, with EndNote you wont loose
precious facts, notes, authors, subjects, page
numbers, etc. - Remember Back-Up your work !!

- Before you do any research, create an EndNote
Library - Open EndNote by clicking on the icon
- You can make it a shortcut on your desktop
8Create an EndNote Library
Next time, open before anything else.
9Select citation style. The new EndNote
library contains no citations. We will add them
from the database searching.
10The most efficient way to use EndNote is to
search Databases and add references found to
your EndNote library. First Open your EndNotes
Library

27Entering a Reference Manually Start EndNote and
open your library Click References ? New
Reference Click Reference Type menu and select
the type of information you are entering. New
Reference Window Enter info where you want it.
You dont have to use every category. More than
one author? give each a separate line in the
Author Field. Remember that the Research Notes
Field can store up to 10 pages of your notes, or
full text articles, quotations, etc. Add an
Image in the Image Field .. one image per
reference, however.

- Insert formatted citations and build formatted
lists of works cited within your Word document - Open EndNote library
- Open Word document
- Note the EndNote toolbar in Word
- Put document cursor where in text reference will
go - Click Find Citations on EndNote toolbar in Word
- Select from EndNote, the citation to export to
Word - Click Insert at bottom of citations window
- EndNote cite was inserted into the Word document
- By default, the citation was inserted into the
Reference List at the end of the document

home continue at the library?
- Make a new folder
- EndNote library, paper and research files into
folder - Save folder to your USB memory stick
- When at a computer in library, insert the memory
stick into the computers USB drive - Go to My Computer and select the USB drive
- Open the EndNote library you saved from home
- EndNote X program on the library computers opens

Word for a stand-alone bibliography?
- Exporting Bibliographies
- Open EndNote library
- Select output style (APA)
- Highlight references to be exported to Word
- Click File and then Click Export
- Save In designate folder and save bibliography
- File Type Rich Text File (RTF) for Word users
- .RTF Can be opened, edited and saved as .doc
- Click Save to export EndNote bibliography to Word

- Select the .rtf bibliography previously
