OPAC
2
Introduction
  • OPAC Online Public Access Catalogue
  • tell you what is available in the Library, where
to find it, and whether it is on loan or not.
  • If all copies are on loan you can reserve it
    online.
  • The entire stock of the Library is on the
catalogue - books, journals, music scores, Media
Resources equipment, videos, sound recording and
    dissertations.

3
  • OPAC also contains information about borrower
    loans, reservations and outstanding fines.
  • Search can be done in several ways
  • Author
  • Title
  • Keyword
  • ISBN

4
  • OPAC is self-teaching because relevant
instructions appear at the bottom left of each
screen to guide you through the stages of a
    search.
  • Advanced users may like to try limiting their
searches Search can be limited by date, language,
format or opus for music. Using this you could,
for example, search ONLY for videos on a
    particular subject.
  • If the book you need is on OPAC but is already on
loan, you can reserve it yourself online
    IMMEDIATELY.

Bibliographic System
6
Introduction
  • A bibliographic system is employed for the
storage and retrieval of information about
publications that might include references to
  • Papers
  • Journals or Articles
  • Books or Chapters
  • Manuscripts

7
  • It can be thought of as a replacement for a
manual card index system and is useful both as a
source of reference and as a tool for the
production of bibliographies that might appear in
    published material.
  • Many bibliographic systems allow several
different types of record to be stored within the
    same file.
  • For example a record for storing references to
papers might have fields Author, Title, Journal,
Volume, Year, Pages and Keywords, whilst that for
a chapter of a book might have the fields Author,
Chapter Title, Book Title, Editors, Page Numbers,
    Year and Keywords.
  • Retrieval can then be restricted to records of a
particular class or alternatively the entire
collection can be searched over common fields
such as Author and Keywords in the example above.

8
  • A good bibliographic system should enable data to
be easily imported from a variety of sources and
output in a variety of formats. For example it
    should be possible to
  • Import information extracted from other systems,
national on-line databases, or from ordinary text
    files.
  • Inter-work with Word Processing packages
enabling the production of a paper with citations
    and a bibliography formatted accordingly
