Title: THE NHS MODERNISATION PLAN
1 THE NHS MODERNISATION PLAN - A PLAN FOR
INVESTMENT A PLAN FOR REFORM
A Seminar and Christmas Function presented by
the Australian College of Health Service
Executives
- In 2000, the British Government embarked on what
is arguably the most radical reform of the NHS,
since its inception in 1948. Designed to give
Britain a health service fit for the 21st
century, the NHS Modernisation Plancommits the
Government to increasing its investment in the
UK Health System and reforming the management and
delivery of health services. - Between 2000 and 2004, the NHS is expected to
grow by one half in cash terms and one third in
real terms. The money has been targeted to fund
extra investment in - new hospitals and one-stop primary care centres
- additional hospital beds and intermediate care
- new GP premises and scanning equipment
- the upgrade of cleaning and food standards
- more medical, nursing and therapy staff
- The investment initiatives will be accompanied by
a reform agenda which includes - new relationships between the Department of
Health and the NHS - greater autonomy for local health services
- new Care Trusts, amalgamating health and social
services - expanded roles for health professionals
- greater powers for consumers
- improved relationships between public and
private health service providers. - With the future direction of our own State and
National Health Systems currently under review,
the College is delighted to announce that Mr.
Mark Britnell, Chief Executive , University
Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust, has agreed to be
guest speaker at our final PD event for 2002.
