PARTNER NOTIFICATION
  • Key Points
  • Many people diagnosed with an STI do not have
symptoms and may not inform their past or current
    sexual partners
  • Patient referral most commonly used preferred
    method by patients doctors
  • Current methods of patient referral only reach
    40-60 of named sexual partners
  • (Trelle et al 2007)

18
PARTNER NOTIFICATION
  • Key Points contd.
  • Contacts are more likely to attend for assessment
as a result of provider referral than by patient
    referral
  • (Mathew Coetzee 2006)
  • Assisting patients with STIs to get partners
testedtreated is an essential element of patient
    care
  • Raising the profile of this part of STI care
could in itself improve outcomes of partner
    notification (NICE 2007)

19
CONCLUSION
  • Partner Notification is resource dependant, time
    consuming and not always easy
  • A patient attended the clinic recently having
been informed he was a contact of syphilis. He
was tested and treated. Look back period
identified approx. 100 partners if positive
  • Help is at hand , refer on!
