The Catalog
  • First, a little history...
  • Book-format catalogs
  • Card-format catalogs
  • Online Public Access Catalogs

3
The HELIN Catalog
  • HELIN Catalog
  • http//helin.uri.edu
  • Includes
  • Books Periodicals
  • Videos Sound Recordings
  • E-Journals E-Books

4
The HELIN Catalog
  • The HELIN Catalog does not include
  • Magazine articles Journal articles
  • You need to consult a database or index in order
to find these.(Well talk about these later)

5
The HELIN Catalog
  • Why isnt it called the URI Catalog?
  • Because it covers more than just URI.
  • HELIN is a consortium -- a group of libraries
    that cooperate and share materials.
  • Your URI ID lets you into the libraries, and lets
    you borrow books from them.

6
HELIN Locations
  • BRYANT
  • CCRI
  • JW
  • PC
  • PCDHS
  • RIC
  • RWU
  • SALVE

7
HELIN Locations
  • URI
  • PELL
  • CCE

8
InRhode System
  • Brown University is part of our consortium, but
only allows you to borrow books via the InRhode
    system.
  • You just cant walk into Browns library and
start poking around. You need a letter of
    introduction from the Reference Desk.

9
ARIHSL -- Hospital Medical Centers
  • Rhode Island Hospital
  • Memorial Hospital
  • St. Josephs Hospital
  • Landmark Med. Center
  • Slater Hospital
  • South County Hospital
  • Butler Hospital
  • Newport Hospital
  • For access to these and other medical libraries,
you need a letter of introduction from the
Reference Desk, and you need to make an
    appointment to visit!

10
What if the book I want isnt here?
  • In many cases, you can go to the library that has
the book you want, and pick it up yourself
  • Or you can use one of the online request links to
have the book sent here (or to another campus).

11
What if the book I want isnt here?
  • HELIN Request 2-3 days
  • InRhode Request 2-3 days
  • Request an Interlibrary Loan 3-4 weeks

12
WAIT!!!
  • Before you go running up to RIC for that book on
    forensics
  • You cant do any of this until your ID has been
activated! Go to the Circulation desk!
  • That allows you to check out books once youre
there, and also request books and access e-books
    and e-journals.

13
Catalog Access Points
  • What the heck is an access point?
  • Searchable fields (or parts) of a record in a
database used to retrieve information. These can
include authors name, title, subject, date, etc.

14
Catalog Access Points
  • Author Search
  • Searches for authors
  • Lastname, Firstname
  • Title Search
  • Titles, of course

15
Catalog Access Points
  • Subject Search
  • Searches for books based on their subject(s)
  • But you cant type in any old subject and get
    good results..!
  • The subjects are really a specific series of
words and phrases concocted by librarians at the
    Library of Congress.
  • (Well talk more about this later.)

16
Catalog Access Points
  • Word (or Key Word) Search
  • Searches for items based on a few words
  • Should be in Boolean format
  • More flexible and powerful than the other search
    techniques
  • But, if you dont have the right terms or put in
useless words, your results will be garbage!

17
Call Numbers
  • Reading an LC call number
  • LC EASY assignment

18
Finding Books
  • Search the HELIN Catalog
  • Check the shelves
  • A-P
  • Q-Z
