- BACKGROUND
- GERIATRIC MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP
- The geriatric medicine fellowship is an
ACGME-accredited program with 9-10 fellows per
year. - Fellows rotate through diverse clinical venues
dispersed over a wide geographical area. - A recently implemented evaluation program targets
the 6 ACGME competencies patient care (PC),
medical knowledge (K), practice-based learning
improvement (PBLI), interpersonal and
communications skills (ICS), professionalism (P),
and systems-based practice (SBP). - The new evaluation program, in addition to global
subjective evaluations (ICS, PBLI), includes the
following - Chart reviews (PC, K, SBP)
- 360-degree peer evaluations (P, SBP)
- Patient surveys (P, PC)
- Checklists (PC)
- Multiple-choice exams (K)
- The implementation of this new program introduced
important challenges for faculty and
administrators - Increased documentation requirements
- Evaluation of complex competencies (PBLI, SBP, P)
- GeriU
- GeriU is a Web-based learning-management system.
- A learning-management system (LMS) is
Internet-based software that facilitates the
delivery and tracking of e-learning across an
institution. - It simplifies and automates administrative and
supervisory tasks. - It tracks learners achievement of competencies.
- AIMS
- To determine the usage pattern and usability by
geriatric medicine fellows of the GeriU
learning-management system (LMS). - METHODS
- GeriU is powered by Angel LMS, a
SCORM-conformant learning- management system. - Angel monitors and tracks all activities on
GeriU. - Activities of all fellows were tracked over a
6-month period. - Number of log-ins
- Time spent on the LMS
- Score on weekly quizzes
- Score on knowledge MCQ test (240 questions)

- RESULTS
- Fellows logged in an average of 7.23 times per
month. - When logged in, a fellow stays about 2.89
minutes per session. - Average time spent online per month is 19.14
minutes. - As a group, the geriatric medicine fellows
answered the weekly quizzes correctly 62.48 of
the time with a standard deviation of 15.92. - Knowledge MCQ test averaged a score of 58.96
with a standard deviation of 9.78. - Fellows find the LMS easy to use.
- Faculty were able to incorporate tracking data
into their comprehensive evaluation according to
the ACGME competencies.

- DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS
- The geriatric medicine fellows use the GeriU LMS
regularly for their academic activities. - The use of GeriU has remained stable, showing
ease of use and acceptance of the system as a
tool. - GeriU has allowed the tracking of fellows
progress through weekly quizzes and knowledge MCQ
tests. - The LMS assists faculty in the evaluation of key
ACGME competencies.
