6No Registration System
- National Injection Safety Survey (March 2004)
shows no formal or regular system to register
injections administered, nor syringes and needles
used in health facilities

8Register Book
- Introduced to determine
- Quantity and sizes of syringes needed
- Injectable medications used most frequently
- Other information
9The latest estimates used data collected with the
Register Book
The 1st forecast was based on an average of 1.5
syringes per person per year

35 2 ml 55 5 ml 10

The 2nd forecast used data from health facilities
in the project sites
10Another Important Finding from the Register Book
- The injectable drugs used most (90 of total)
are - Benzathine Penicillin
- Procaine Penicillin
- Kanamycin
These drugs require more than one syringe for
preparation administration (1 for the dilution
and 2 shots using different syringe and needle)
11Conceptual Problem Defining Supply Needs At the
beginning we thought we could define supply need
by providing one syringe for each injectable, but
we found that for 90 of injectables we usually
provide 3 syringes
12An Average Health Center in Mozambique May Give
up to 500 Injections per Month
For 500 injections we need to provide 500
(500 .90) (500 .90) 500450450 1,400

Help Create a Sustainable System in Countries
Like Mozambique
14The Register Book Useful in Health Centers and
Posts
Only injections are recorded
Material for blood samples needs to be recorded
too
Hospital wards, labs and HIV outpatient services
also use syringes for blood sampling, and
syringes are distributed to them first
15The Register Book is a First Step
Towards Informed Supply Management
