Biography
  • He was born in Zbiroh in 1845.
  • After High School in Zbiroh he went to College in
    Prague (capital city of Czech Republic).
  • During studies he was a member of two poetic
    associations Oreb and Vltavan.
  • In 1868 he interrupt studies and departed to
    America. He was amazed by new opportunities in
    United States and returned in 1970.
  • During a visit of USA he got an experience that
    distinguish him form other Czech writers.

Biography
  • He worked as an writer, editor, English teacher
    and magazine publisher.
  • He was two times married, first wife died 13
    month after wedding.
  • He became famous as an owner and leader of
    magazine Lumír.
  • Lumír criticized actual political situation and
    Czech society.
  • As a retirement he translated many famous English
    works to Czech language including 32 plays by
    Shakespeare.
  • During translation of 33.play (Henry VI.) he
    died.

USA
  • In 1868 he departed to United States for 4 years.
    There he worked as an editor of Czech Newspaper,
    a teacher of children from Poland, a farmer and
    ship worker. His great experience crystallizes
    his opinions and support him in idea to be poem
    writer.
  • He describes his experiences from America in his
    first book called Básne (Poems). In this book
    he describes an atmosphere of living in United
    States. He felt a compassion with Native
    Americans. All of his impressions he describes in
    two-part collection of book of travels Americké
    obrázky (American Pictures). Main part of the
    book is about oppression of Native Americans.
    United States propagated freedom and democracy,
    but they didnt respect it.

Lesní studánka/ The Forest Spring

  • kde nejhlubí je les,
  • tam roste tmavé kapradí
  • a vukol rudý vres.
  • Tam ptáci, lane chodí pít
  • pod javorový kmen,
  • ti ptáci za dne bílého,
  • ty lane v noci jen.
  • Kdy usnou lesy hluboké
  • a kolem ticho jest,
  • a nebesa i studánka
  • jsou plny zlatých hvezd.
