The Four Winds Model
  • Designed for Northern Plains Nations
  • Used to balance the hunter/gatherer diet
  • Reflects proper ratios of Protein, Carbohydrates,
    and Fat
  • Utilizes cooking methods that used water, such as
    boiling, roasting, and steaming

West Wind
  • The western skies bring thunder clouds which
    bring life giving rain
  • Pure water was believed to give people wellness
  • Traditionally all drinks were water based

North Wind
  • Represented by the strength and endurance of the
    Buffalo
  • Buffalo and large game animals were plentiful and
    provided lean meat
  • Meat was source of protein

East Wind
  • Represents the dawn, and oppor-tunity to learn
    from a new day
  • Was the season of renewal
  • Time of new plant growth and the beginning of the
    gathering season
  • A variety of berries were eaten

South Wind
  • Represented by the warm summer wind and the
    energy received from plants that require the long
    growing season
  • Corn, beans, potato, and squash, were sources of
    starch
  • Turnips were used as a bread product

Changing With Time
  • 1900s
  • Moving to reservations caused them to adopt
    western food
  • 1940s and 50s
  • No longer able to live off land and were required
    to buy foods

Indian Diets Today
  • Starch often takes up too
  • much of meal
  • Portion sizes are much larger
  • Use much more fat and salt in cooking processes
  • Lower activity level and food patterns have
    caused decline in health
