  • Dates back to the Crusades - 1248. Worn as
    honoured badge of rank
  • 1485 1562 badge of Lord High Admiral of England
  • Used for passing orders since 1562 in the English
    fleet
  • Now badge of office of Chief Boatswains Mate,
    Quartermaster Boatswains mates

SHIPS BELL
  • Bears the name of the Ship
  • Historically used for time-keeping
  • Used upturned as font for christenings
  • 16 bells rung by youngest member of ships
    company at New Year 8 bells for old year and 8
    for new year

SALUTING THE QUARTERDECK
  • Before the country was officially Church Of
    England the Roman Catholic faith was observed.
  • A crucifix was affixed at entrance to Quarterdeck
  • Sign of the Cross was made entering/leaving
    Quarterdeck the start of saluting
  • Tradition remains that Quarterdeck is saluted
