Title: Kangaroo island
1Kangaroo island
Eric Adams Jacob Corbin
2Description of this region
Kangaroo island is the third largest island of
Australia. It is nearly ninety-seven miles long
and thirty seven miles wide. Located
approximately seventy miles from Adelaide.
3Wildlife
There are several reasons why Kangaroo Island has
become well known as a place to see wildlife in
its natural habitat. More than half the Island
has never been cleared of vegetation, with about
one third conserved in National and Conservation
Parks, including five significant Wilderness
Protection Areas. The remaining unlearned areas
form bush corridors between larger areas of
vegetation
4Climate
Relatively mild conditions are experienced during
both summer and winter, typical of the insular
character Climate At times, cool ocean breezes
make windproof clothing necessary, while central
areas of the Island occasionally experience
temperatures of 35 - 40oCKangaroo Island
experiences warm, dry summers and mild, wet
winters with summer temperatures averaging
between 20-25 degrees Celsius and winter
temperatures between 13-15 degrees Celsius.
Annual rainfall varies markedly across the Island
ranging from 450-1,000 mm with two thirds of
annual rainfall occurring between May and
September

Seal Bay Conservation Park is a breeding colony
of about 600 rare Australian sea lions, which is
estimated to be more than 10 of the world's
entire population. It is located on the south
coast of the island. Fishing and swimming are
prohibited in the aquatic reserve, however it
does offer access to the beach to experience a
close encounter with these beautiful mammals.
Visitors can walk within 20 feet of the
endangered species, while accompanied by a
qualified park ranger or approved guide

There are many old buildings, light houses,
museums, memorials and relics which portray the
rich history of Kangaroo Island. Sunken ships can
be spotted on diving expeditions testifying to
the dangerous waters and the risks taken to
settle Australia.
