Title: The Solar System

1
The Solar System
  • There are nine planets in our solar system that
revolve (circle) around the sun. They all travel
in the same direction, counter-clockwise, around
    the sun.

2
The Solar System Is Made up of Two Parts
  • Part 1.
  • The inner solar system Which contains
    mercury, Venus, earth, and mars.
  • Part 2.
  • The outer solar system Which contains
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

4
Mercury
5
Mercury
  • Size the planet mercury is about the same.
  • size as earths moon.
  • Distance from sun 1st planet 58 kilometers.
  • One orbit around the sun 87.97 days.
  • Mercury is a world of extremes. Because it is so
close to the sun during the day a person could
cook to death, but because mercury spins so
slowly a person would freeze at night.

6
Venus
7
Venus
  • Size Venus is about the same size as earth
  • Distance from sun 2nd planet at 108 million km
  • One orbit around the sun 224.7 days
  • Venus rotates on its axis more slowly than any
other planet. It completes one rotation in about
243 days and 24 minutes. Venus is the brightest
object in our sky, besides the sun and moon.

8
Earth
9
Earth
  • Distance from sun 3rd planet at 150 million km
  • One orbit around the sun 365.7 days
  • Earth is the only planet in our solar system that
has life. The earth's temperature, weather,
atmosphere and many other factors are just right
    to keep us alive.

10
Earth and Luna
11
Mars
12
Mars
  • Size about ½ the size of earth
  • Distance from the sun 4th planet at 228 million
    km
  • One orbit around the sun 686.98 days
  • Scientists like to study mars because it is more
like earth than any other planet. Evidence
suggests that mars once had rivers, streams,
lakes, and even an ocean. Any water on mars is
    now either frozen or underground

14
Jupiter
15
Jupiter
  • Size 10 times the size of earth.
  • Distance from the sun 5th planet at 780 million
    km.
  • One orbit around the sun 11.86 years.
  • Jupiter has had a big storm that has lasted at
least 300 years. The size of the storm is bigger
than earth. Jupiter has a total of 28 moons.

Saturn
Saturn
18
Saturn
  • Size Saturn is the second largest planet in our
solar system. It is also 10 times larger than
    earth.
  • Distance from the sun the 6th planet at 1.6
    billion km.
  • One orbit around the every 29.46 years.
  • Saturns beautiful rings are 169,800 miles wide,
but less thick than a football field. Because
Saturn is bigger you would weigh more on Saturn
    than on earth.

Uranus
21
Uranus
  • Size Uranus is four times the size of earth.
  • Distance from the sun 7th planet at 2.9 billion
    km.
  • One orbit around the sun 84 years.
  • Unlike all the other planets and most of the
moons in our solar system Uranus spins on its
side.  It is believed that long ago a very large
object smashed into this planet.  The crash was
so powerful that it completely changed the
    direction of Uranus' spin. .

Neptune
24
Neptune
  • Size Neptune is also about 4 times the size of
    earth.
  • Distance from the sun 8th planet at 4.5 billion
    km.
  • One orbit around the sun 164.79 years.
  • Neptune has a giant storm much like the storm on
Jupiter.   This storm is often called the great
dark spot.  We do not know how long this storm
has been around. It is so far away that we could
not get a good view of Neptune until we began to
    send robot explorers into space.

Pluto
  • Size Pluto is about 1/6th the size of earth.
  • Distance from the sun the 9th planet at 5.9
    billion km.
  • One orbit around the sun 248 years.
  • Pluto is smaller than 7 of the moons in the solar
system.  Because it is so small many scientists
don't consider it a planet at all.  In 1999 a
group of scientists attempted to change Pluto to
    a comet.
