Title: The Usage of Computer Science in Medical Science
1The Usage of Computer Science in Medical Science
- Especially in Radiography, and file management
2Main points
- Digitalizing
- Analyzing
- Copying
- Storing
- Sharing
3Digitalizing
- A computer helps doctors to digitalize many
useful data. - Examples X-Ray , Case History
4Output of the Traditional X-ray Machine
- Use film with silver bromide
- The silver cation in the film are sensitive to
the X-ray, if those particles get sensitization
of X-ray, they will be deoxidize to silver
particles.
5- Those silver particles will condense in the film,
and display as black in color - And else silver bromide will be wash away from
the film, then the film will have its own color,
which is basic transparent. - Then the final output formed.

Wilhelm Röntgen, of Albert von Kölliker's hand.

7Digitalizing the X-ray Radiography
- Direct Digital Radiography (DDR)
- Computed Radiography (CR)
8Direct Digital Radiography (DDR)
- Use a flat-panel detector as a medium to transfer
the x-ray signals to the electrical digital
signals - Or use the Multi-wire proportional chamber X-ray
projectional scanning system. Every wire in the
chamber has a great proportion signal of x-ray,
the signals have been A/D transferred and then
send to the CPU to process into the digital image
.
9Computed Radiography (CR)
- The early CR was developed by Fuji Film, they
used Imaging Plate (IP) to instead the normal
film. - After the IP is exposed by x-ray, they computed
the picture to digital image. - This is the most popular way of CR

11Digitalizing the case history
- It is easy to digitalizing the case history.
- The Word and Excel program in the computers can
help staffs in a hospital to set up files easily. - For those old cases, they also could use a
scanner to digitalize.
12Advantages of digital case history
- Save spaces
- Save natural sources
- Easy to find
- Easy to manage
- Easy to share
13Analyzing
- After the image have been stored, there are some
particular programs that can help doctors to
analyze the image. - Before the usage of computer in the clinic,
doctors used to use rulers to measure the
distance of a tumor or other strange things.
14An application of analyzing
- There are examples of the analyzing application
of computer science in radiography, you can visit
our webpage for more information about computed
Tomography (CT) etc. - http//www.ugrad.cs.ubc.ca/r3s5/page1.html
15Storing Copying
- Once the image have been digitalized, it could be
stored in the computer. - It also could be copied for infinite times.
However, for the traditional film, doctors cannot
copy them easily.
16Situation without computer
- Before the computer science is used in the
medical field, once the doctor in a hospital
cannot solve a problem, he/she has to invite
other doctors to come over to the hospital from
other places. - It takes time and not really efficient.
17Now, we can share easily
- Doctors could send images such as x-ray photos,
CT photos, case history through the internet. - For an emergency case, this is really important
to save a life. - We save time for both doctors and patients.
18Future.
- Our case history will be displaced by a chip
which could store our health history from birth
to death - A doctor cannot be a qualified doctor without
computer skills.
19Still, not enough
- There should be more and more specific programs
written for supporting medical field, such as
build up models for some specific diseases. - And so on
