MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL I am amazed that we
are already into the fourth and final period of
this school year. The excitement related to the
end of this school terms activities is already
in the air. One of the most enjoyable aspects of
primary school students is their high energy
level coupled with their maturing personalities.
Although we have 5 weeks of school remaining,
many of our students are prepared to transition
to the next grade level. However, there is still
much to do. On Monday, April 20th we are asking
all of our parents to encourage their children to
turn off the TV for one week. This will assist
the children in spending time preparing for
successful performance while taking the Criterion
Reference Competency Test (CRCT), which will
start on Tuesday, April 21st and end on Thursday,
April 23rd. All first grade students will take
this test. Therefore, it is important for them
to be at school everyday, alert, well-behaved and
on time. The following are important dates for

Students name teachers name are required on
envelope Any transportation changes should be
sent on a separate note to the teacher (notes on
or inside the ASP envelope are not seen by the
teacher) Student or parent must put payment
envelope in the safe  If you have any questions
about payment of ASP, please call Angie Thornton,
ASP Bookkeeper 770-819-5804 x 227 
Please remember If your child is tardy, after
750, an adult must accompany the child into the
school to sign them in. If your child is absent,
please remember to send in an excuse for their
absence. Do not change the way your child will go
home by e-mail. Either write the teacher a note
and place in daily folder, call the front office
and fax the change no later than 145 pm.
Remember ASP is a prepaid program. You may pay
for your childs meals online at www.mealpay.com.
Please write childs name on all outer wear to
identify it easily if it is misplaced.

First Grades April Newsletter Article All First
Grade students will participate in taking the
CRCT on April 21st 23rd. We will continue to
use best practices, TAG READ Strategy, IQ, and
TIPS as we review and re-teach skills and
concepts to ensure that our students will be
ready for the CRCT. Make sure that your child
gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast,
and is on time each day. We know that our
students are going to do well! After CRCT we
will have one more week of Functional Writing and
then we will start Response to Literature in
Writers Workshop. In Readers Workshop we will
continue building on our comprehension strategies
and increase fluency. For mathematics we will
review telling time by hour and half hour,
compare the length, capacity, and weight of
concrete objects using appropriate tools,
organizing and interpreting graphs, and solving
word problems. Upcoming Events May 1st AR

Kindergarten News  On Monday, April 20th
kindergarteners enjoyed an in-school field trip
from the Chattahoochee Nature Center. The
naturalists taught us about the red tailed hawk
and the great horned owl. We learned how the
raptors were similar and different as well as why
the birds were living in captivity at the
Chattahoochee Nature Center. We loved seeing the
beautiful birds up so close!  The Spring Musical
with Kindergarten and First Grade will be
Thursday, April 30th after the PTA meeting. We
would like to have all kindergarteners perform
with Mr. Frisbie.  Keep reading with you child
we have two more weeks to complete Accelerated
Reading Tests. All tests must be completed by May
1st. All Media Center books are due by May 1st.

Summer Reading Programs are Fun and Promote
Literacy! Public libraries across the State
encourage reading through the Summer Reading
Program. In 2009, kids can Be Creative _at_ Your
Library! Children and families visit public
libraries to choose what they want to read as
part of a summertime mix of activities. Research
shows that children who read during the summer
perform better when school resumes in the fall.
So, make sure to sign up for your local librarys
summer reading program.
Reading during the summer is important for
everyone, and especially for children from
low-income families. It helps children keep and
improve the reading skills they've developed
during the school year. Some studies show that
children who don't read during the summer lose
skills by fall. Summer reading can help close the

Musical Notes Dear parents and students,
Kindergarten, First Grade and Multi-age Thursday,
April 30th 2009 630 PM Come and join us as we
sing farewell to our 1st graders and dedicate the
Austell Primary School Song. Congratulations to
Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Irby and Mrs. Farrells
classes for winning Class of the Month in music!
These classes demonstrated excellent musicianship
and good behavior. They had the highest CDs on
the jukebox wall. Have a great summer, Mr.
Frisbie
Spring Concert!
Austells Artists Since this is the last
newsletter of the school year I wanted to thank
all the parents, students and teachers for their
support. This year has been great! The students
have learned so much about different artists and
their styles as well as the elements and
principals of art. We will be wrapping up the
school year with lessons on Aboriginal Art for
Kindergarten and Pointillism for First Grade. I
am looking forward to teaching and inspiring
Austells young artists next year! Thanks Again!

Computer Lab In the lab, first graders worked on
Spring Fling Flyers! We were able to post them
throughout the school as advertisements for the
Spring Fling. These next few weeks we will be
writing Thank You notes in appreciation of our
Volunteers, Partners in Education and local
businesses who have made donations of time,
materials or money to your childs school this
year. Our Kindergarteners are still working on
their graphing skills. They are keeping me busy
thinking of new challenges for them. They are
so smart!
  CLINIC NOTES The arrival of spring also
brings with it episodes of allergies and asthma.
I am seeing many children with itchy, red, watery
eyes. Here are some tips 1. Give your
child a bath and wash hair before bedtime to wash
off the pollen. 2. Wash hands and face when
your child comes in from outside. 3. Limit
outside time while the pollen count is high.
4. Keep windows and doors closed. 5.
Contact your doctor if allergies become
particularly bothersome. There are
medications that can make your child more
comfortable. 6. Contact your doctor if you
notice discolored drainage from the eyes. This
may be a sign of viral or bacterial
pinkeye, which is contagious. If your child
has asthma, please remember to keep an inhaler or
nebulizer medication in the clinic. Thanks
so much to all those who have returned borrowed
clothing or have donated clothes to the clinic.
Please remember the clinic if you clean out
closets this summer and have clothes to give
away. I have enjoyed working with your
children this year. I hope you all have a

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELOR Dr. Gretchen
Kea Thinking While Its Hot The students will
soon be on summer break. The slower pace of
summer is the perfect time to help process what
your child has learned during the school year and
find new ways to stretched his/her mind. Keep the
learning going all summer long with these
warm-weather activities that are fun as well as
educational. TALK WITH CHALK Suggest that your
child grab some fat sticks of sidewalk chalk and
head outside to create some colorful artistic
drawings on the blacktop driveway, the concrete
sidewalks, or pavement. Use the chalk to inspire
a family or neighborhood message board. Write and
draw great picture notes for those passing by to
read. Leave chalk for others to write messages
back. OPEN A BOX Look for exciting ways to add to
your play area and increase your childs
imagination. For example, use different sizes of
opened cardboard boxes to transform a jungle gym
into a castle or rocket ship. To create a
colorful moving mosaic, let children dance and
twirl with crepe paper streamers as they catch
the wind outside or us a fan inside. BUILD ON
BOOKS The public library is a wonderful spot to
cool down, relax and dream about becoming a
variety of characters or pretend to be living in
faraway places. Libraries (book stores, too!)
offer more than just books. Investigate the many
unique summertime programs. Take advantage of
puppet workshops, visits from childrens authors,
or dramatizations by storybook actors. As you can
see, creative ways to keep your child engaged
abound, whether youre in your own backyard or
out around town. No matter what you do, the
learning momentum you enjoy together will carry
on into the next school year.
