The Navajo

Map of Navajo/location of Navajo
  • This is the map of Navajo.
  • The Navajo in winter they lived in earth-covered
lodges and in summer in brush shelters called
    Hogan.
  • According to the scientists who study different
cultures, the first Navajo lived in western
Canada some one thousand years ago. They belonged
to an American Indian group called the
Athabasca's,. They called themselves Dine, or the
    people.

4
Navajo Customs and the Arts
  • The Navajo were very good at pottery, jewelry and
weaving. The Navajo also believed in spider woman.

5
Weapons and tools
The Navajo traded muskets for spears
6
The Navajo Geography
  • The Navajo mostly lived in Utah, Arizona, and New
Mexico. They had canyons, rocks, and sandstones.
Shrubs and trees also grow in the Navajo region.
Its really hot, dry, and they have semi
    desserts.

7
Navajo Food
  • Navajos eat rabbits and dont eat what we eat
because deer and rabbit are the only animal they
could catch on the semi dessert land in Arizona.
They get food from hunters and their wives.

8
Navajo Clothes
  • The Navajo tribe wore thin clothes made out of
wool, rabbit, deer, thread and sheep.
  • They wore
    breaches, thin
    blankets and belts.

9
Navajo Shelter
  • They had Hogans and Teepees shelters instead of
brick houses because its really hot in the
bottoms of the mountains and right in the
deserts. Hogans are houses that are made of
sticks that are shaped like a cube. Teepees are
also made of sticks but not shaped like a cube
but shaped like a cone. Hogans have a window in
it, and a Teepees dont have any windows.

10
The Makahs
11
What type of house did they live in?
  • The Makah people built longhouses .The
longhouses are long and rectangular. Fifty or
more people often lived in each house. The Makah
people built their longhouses out of cedar
boards. Each house had benches, beds , and fire
pits. Some Makah families carve wooden house
poles in front of their homes. The house poles
showed the histories of their families.

12
Location of makah
The Makah lived in the Pacific Northwest Coast
in Washington State. The Makah lived on a
reservation, that is their land that belongs to
them and they have all the power of that land.
13
What type of food they ate?
  • The Makah ate Salmon, Halibut, Walrus, Seals, and
hunted Whales, and deer. They picked berries.
They caught Shellfish and ate them. They ate
seaweed they dug out of the sea. They caught
    seagulls to eat them.

14
What type of clothing did they use?
  • The Makahs shirts, skirts, hats ,and robes, were
made from cedar bark. Shoes didnt matter. They
went bare foot every where they went. They wore
leather moccasins for special occasions. They
only wore snowshoes during the winter. The
snowshoes were made out of wood and sometimes of
rawhide. These were different shapes and sizes
and used depending how deep the snow was. Some
snowshoes had names like swallowtail, bear paws
    or beaver tail.

15
What did they make their tools and cooking items
from?
  • Tools were made from the materials that grew
around the area. The coastal tribes in Washington
and Organ used cedar wood for everything from
canoes to dishes. They made armor out of wood to
protect them in the forest. Coastal people
further north had fewer materials ton use. Their
tools were made tools that were not only useful,
but were beautiful. Tools not only made peoples
lives easier. But brought pleasure to those using
them. Natives found creative uses for materials.
They had things called candlefish made from dried
and charred fish. The kind of fish used was oily
so they gave off lots of light.

16
What were their traditions-religions?
  • The Makah people had their own religions. They
followed a set of spiral beliefs. The Makahs
religions said that all the things in nature had
spirits. The spirits proved everything, the makah
needed to live. The Makah religion taught Makah
people to respect nature. They did not take more
than they needed. The Makah gave thanks for the
food, clothing, and shelter. Today, some Makahs
people practice the traditions of the Makah
    religion. Others follow Christianity.
Christianity is a religion based on following
Jesus Christ. Some Makah people follow the Indian
shake religions. This religion combines the Makah
    religions and Christianity.

Description on climate
Life in the Pacific Northwest was not easy
because it was cold in the winter and hotter in
the summer. In the summer they would wear
something light because it was hot. In the winter
they would wear a lot more clothing.
18
THE PAWNEE
19
What kind of houses did they live in?
The Pawnee lived in dome shaped earth covered
lodges. When they went buffalo hunting they would
use tepees.
20
Description on Climate
The climate in the Plains was hot in the summer
and cold in the winter. The Pawnee were luckier
than other tribes because they lived near a
river. They lived near the Platte River. Having a
river in the winter and the hot summer must have
been great.
21
Arts and Crafts
The Pawnee were really good at woven baskets,
poetry, and paintings.
22
What type of clothing did they use?
Pawnee women wore deerskin skirts and poncho-like
blouses. Pawnee men wore breechcloths and leather
leggings. Men did not usually wear shirts, but
warriors sometimes wore special buckskin war
shirts. The Pawnees wore moccasins on their feet,
and in cold weather, they wore long buffalo-hide
robes. A Pawnee lady's dress or warrior's shirt
was fringed and often decorated with beadwork and
painted designs.
23
Food, tools, and weapons
The Pawnee hunted buffalo, raccoons, quail,
skunks, and prairie chickens. The food they ate
was corn, squash and beans. The tools and
weapons they used were ropes and shields.
24
IROQUOISE
25
What type of clothing did they use?
Iroquois men wore breechcloths with long
leggings. Iroquois women wore wraparound skirts
with shorter leggings. Men did not originally
wear shirts in Iroquois culture, but women often
wore a tunic called an overdress. Iroquois people
also wore moccasins on their feet and heavy robes
in winter.
26
What type of food did they use?
The Iroquois were farming people. Iroquois women
did most of the farming, planting crops of corn,
beans, and squash and harvesting wild berries and
herbs. Iroquois men did most of the hunting,
shooting deer and elk and fishing in the rivers.
Iroquois Indian dishes included cornbread, soups,
and stews cooked on stone hearths.
27
Tools and weapons
Iroquois hunters used bows and arrows. Iroquois
fishermen generally used spears and fishing
poles. In war, Iroquois men used their bows and
arrows or fought with clubs, spears and shields.
28
Arts and crafts
The Iroquois tribes were known for their mask
carving. Beadwork and the more demanding
porcupine quillwork are more common Iroquois
crafts. The Iroquois Indians also crafted wampum
out of white and purple shell beads.

Summary
Where the Iroquois lived it was very warm and
sunny so the food there was a little better than
the Pawnee had for food. Even though they both
planted their crops the Iroquois food is still
better than the Pawnees because there is more
sun where the Iroquois live so when they are
planting their crops the sun shines more on the
crops so they grow better and faster. Now the
Navajo and the Makah are kind of similar. They
both hunt for their food, and they both eat deer.
The climate where the Makah lived was not easy to
live in. In the winter it was a little bit cold
but once they got back into hot weather it was a
great transition. The Pawnee where luckier than
all the tribes that I did because the Pawnee
lived on a river which was good in all climates.
